Anne Arundel County Government is hiring for a full-time, permanent Accountant II vacancy within the Office of Finance located at the Arundel Center in Annapolis, MD. During the probationary period, this hybrid role requires working on-site Monday through Friday. This is advanced professional accounting work in developing accounting procedures or maintaining and reviewing county fiscal records. The role involves applying professional accounting knowledge and skills to a key function of the central accounting system. Work includes balancing accounts and preparing various regular and special accounting reports and extends at times to the development and installation of new or updates to a new financial system. Supervision is exercised over subordinate clerical employees when assigned. Work is performed independently within established policies, procedures, and accounting techniques, and is reviewed by professional superiors through conferences, reports, audits, and internal controls.
Considerable knowledge of accounting principles, procedures, and processes governing the receipt, custody, and expenditure of monies. Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, and standard clerical techniques as applied to the maintenance of accounting systems. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public finance administration, and data processing systems as they apply to the maintenance of accounting records. Ability to plan, organize, and conduct a central accounting system function. Ability to analyze and solve a variety of routine accounting and fiscal problems, and to participate in designing and implementing accounting systems and procedures. Ability to supervise the work of a small group of billing and program specialist personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other county employees, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Skill in operating a calculator and CRT terminal.
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, with major coursework in accounting. Experience: Two or more years of experience in accounting and fiscal operations. Note: For a University or College outside the United States, the applicant must provide documentation of accreditation and educational equivalency, which can be accomplished through a credential evaluation service. Applicants with a foreign degree must provide this documentation upon the close of the announcement. This position requires a thorough background check.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following areas:
- Advanced Excel experience.
- Experience using Oracle Financial Systems.
- Experience preparing financial statements and reports.
