Deputy Marshal

The Office of Judicial Administration is responsible for the efficient administration of all agencies that operate under the direction of the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court. That includes 200 personnel; fiscal management; communication; technology; legal services; intergovernmental relations; services for the trial courts; and support for court boards, commissions, and committees. The Office is headed by Chief Administrative Officer Aaron Hood, who reports directly to the Chief Justice of Indiana and serves as the link between the Chief Justice and the agencies of the Court.

 
Salary: Compensation mirrors the Indiana State Police salary matrix.

About the Job:

This position serves as Deputy Marshal for the Indiana Supreme Court and maintains the security of the Chief Justice, Justices, Clerk, and their staff, in accordance with Indiana Code 35-24-5. In addition, this position executes court orders and civil process.

A Day in the Life:

Provides and manages security for the Chief Justice, Justices, Clerk, and staff, including primary offices, offsite venues, and applicable residence. Serves as a liaison with State Police, Capitol Police, and local authorities for security issues and requests. Requires the ability to meet the demands associated with the essential duties and responsibilities of the job, including maintaining the level of attention and stamina necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.

• Maintain alarm systems in Statehouse, Capital Center, Clerk’s Records Office and Justices’ residences
• Perform multiple physical checks of each chamber, Courtroom, Conference Room, Robing Room, Law Library, Clerk’s Office and other administrative offices 
• Maintain presence in Statehouse court offices and Capital Center, and observe pedestrian traffic in and around chambers and offices
• Arrange and provide transport for the Chief Justice and Justices to speaking engagements, events, etc.
• Assist with advanced work and logistics for events involving the Chief Justice and Justices
• Perform daily security screenings of Indiana Supreme Court mail
• Assist with receiving and delivery of supplies as needed 
• Assist with submitting work orders for building maintenance matters 
• Receive invoices from Peoplesoft Financials as needed
• Assist with issuing and programming employee ID badges with appropriate access control permissions
• Arrange transport of Justices’ robes for cleaning and perform inspection upon return
• Open and close court sessions, and maintain a presence outside/inside of courtroom 
• Address attorneys and obtain sign in sheets for oral arguments
• Serve as bailiff and security for Supreme Court agencies and Court of Appeals hearings, as needed
• Assist Office of Judicial Administration and associated agencies with security concerns or employee terminations, as requested
• Coordinate with Capitol and State Police to arrange security for special events, i.e., Bar Admission ceremonies, State of the State, State of the Judiciary
• Monitor and manage any written or verbal threats against the Court, the Chief Justice, Justices and/or Court employees 
• Assist with setup as needed for events or meetings in the Courtroom, Conference Room or Robing Room
• Coordinate and attend security and/or emergency related training for the Supreme Court Security Team and Court employees 
• Facilitate transportation of supply items or personnel between buildings as needed 
• Provide trial courts with a security assessment and written report with recommendations, including education and advice on needs
• Additional responsibilities as assigned
