Job Description
The Maintenance Technician performs a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and facility maintenance tasks to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations in a feed and grain manufacturing environment. This role handles both scheduled and emergency maintenance, troubleshoots equipment issues, and supports new installations and projects while adhering to all applicable safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance on plant equipment and systems across all areas of the facility.
- Carry out mechanical repairs on pumps, valves, heat exchangers, screw conveyors, drag conveyors, bucket elevators, bearings, gearboxes, and related components.
- Perform electrical repairs on motors and motor starters, including running conduit and pulling wires for new installations.
- Conduct light electrical work as needed and support maintenance of industrial electrical systems, with experience in 480-volt systems considered a plus.
- Maintain and troubleshoot the boiler and steam system to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Perform welding tasks, including MIG, stick, and arc welding, as needed for maintenance and repair activities.
- Complete building repairs and cleaning tasks to support overall facility upkeep and cleanliness.
- Adjust and calibrate controls such as knobs, valves, switches, levers, and index arms on control panels to regulate process variables including flows, temperatures, pressures, vacuum, time, and chemical usage.
- Operate and monitor processing units such as heaters, coolers, thermal oxidizers, compressors, exchangers, and other equipment through automatic regulation and remote control systems.
- Identify malfunctioning units by observing control instruments such as meters and gauges and by responding to automatic warning signals including lights and audible alarms.
- Inspect equipment to determine the location and nature of malfunctions, including leaks, breakages, and faulty valves or components.
- Communicate directly with production personnel to coordinate maintenance and repair work and minimize downtime.
- Patrol process units regularly to verify safe, efficient, and compliant operating conditions.
- Perform preventive maintenance activities as required to extend equipment life and reduce unplanned outages.
- Assist with new equipment installations and other plant projects as requested by supervision.
- Collaborate with contractors to plan and implement the installation of new equipment or systems.
- Participate actively in safety, health, and environmental programs and follow all related procedures.
- Apply knowledge of city, county, state, and federal regulations related to maintenance and plant equipment and work in a manner that ensures continuous compliance.
- Support and participate in programs and procedures designed to maintain plant cleanliness and orderly work areas.
- Perform basic maintenance on mobile equipment, excluding major repairs such as transmission or motor replacement.
- Be available for overtime work on a scheduled or call-in basis as operational needs require.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by plant leadership to support overall plant performance and reliability.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience as a maintenance technician in an industrial, manufacturing, or similar plant environment.
- Strong mechanical skills with hands-on experience repairing pumps, valves, heat exchangers, conveyors, bucket elevators, bearings, gearboxes, and related equipment.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting ability for mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance on industrial equipment and systems.
- Proficiency in welding, including MIG, stick, and arc welding, for maintenance and repair tasks.
- Ability to perform electrical repairs on motors and motor starters, including installing conduit and pulling wires.
- Capability to perform light electrical work safely and in accordance with established procedures.
- Experience adjusting, setting, and calibrating process control devices such as knobs, valves, switches, levers, and index arms on control panels.
- Ability to monitor and interpret readings from meters, gauges, and other control instruments to diagnose equipment conditions.
- Skill in identifying malfunctions by observing warning signals such as indicator lights and alarm horns.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting boiler and steam systems in an industrial setting.
- Knowledge of safety, health, and environmental practices relevant to industrial maintenance.
- Understanding of applicable city, county, state, and federal regulations related to plant equipment and maintenance activities.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate work with production and other departments.
- Ability to work overtime on a scheduled or call-in basis when required by plant operations.
- Capability to perform basic mobile equipment maintenance within defined limits.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with industrial electrical systems, including 480-volt systems, is a strong plus.
- Experience in maintaining equipment commonly used in feed and grain operations, such as screw conveyors, drag conveyors, bucket elevators, and corn processing equipment, is beneficial.
- Experience working with thermal oxidizers, compressors, exchangers, heaters, coolers, and similar processing units is advantageous.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and documentation practices.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with contractors during equipment installation and upgrade projects.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Adaptability to handle a variety of tasks, from mechanical and electrical work to building maintenance and cleaning.

Work Environment
The role is based in a feed and grain manufacturing facility that operates industrial processing equipment such as conveyors, bucket elevators, boilers, steam systems, compressors, exchangers, heaters, coolers, and thermal oxidizers. You will work in and around production areas where equipment runs continuously and where conditions can include noise, dust, and varying temperatures typical of an industrial plant. The position involves hands-on work with mechanical and electrical systems, including industrial electrical equipment and, where applicable, 480-volt systems. You will perform tasks both indoors and in plant areas that may require climbing, standing, and moving between units to patrol and inspect equipment. Overtime may be required on a scheduled or call-in basis to support plant operations and respond to maintenance needs.
