Job TitleJob TitleJob DescriptionJob Summary To diagnose and perform maintenance and repair on a wide range of city vehicles, mechanical and motorized equipment, lawn and garden equipment, off-road machinery, snow removal equipment by ensuring the safe and efficient operation of city equipment and vehicles across multiple departments. This role involves various skilled and semi-skilled automotive and equipment repairs, encompassing automobiles, trucks, and select heavy equipment.Essential FunctionsEquipment Maintenance and RepairMaintain, inspect, repair, and replace worn or broken equipment, vehicle, and truck parts; perform regular preventative maintenance tasks; perform diagnostic tests as appropriate; provide mechanical knowledge in the repair of trucks and related construction and safety equipmentRepair and replace components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, and high voltage light systems; repair, adjust and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, hydraulic and air brakesWeld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate, modify, and repair body chassis parts; weld, braze, solder, and cut steel, stainless steel, and aluminum by torch and mig welder; sandblast truck beds, plows, and wheelsDiagnose, maintain, and repair electrical systems components, ignition systems, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters, and batteries; diagnosis, maintain, repair, and recondition hydraulic systemsReplace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform safety inspections on equipmentAnalyze operational and equipment performance data to identify issues, determine root causes, and implement solutionsInstall radios, emergency lighting systems and special equipment for police, public works and parks and recreation vehiclesGeneral Maintenance & Emergency ResponseDrive all types of city vehicles as needed for testing, field service, or deliveriesResponds to service work and related problems that may occur after hours, on weekends, call back for snow events and during holidaysResponsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of shop buildingMaintenance OperationsPerform preventative maintenance on equipment, including lubricating and replacing worn partsOperate shop machinery including grinders, welding equipment, and a variety of power and hand toolsIdentify equipment issues and failures and communicate findings to supervisorRecycle appropriate fluids, filters, and materials including oil and refrigerants; safely dispose of non-recyclable materials in accordance with regulationsOversee fuel system management, including vendor coordination to maintain adequate fuel supplyRecords Management and ReportingEnsure accurate and complete record keeping for fleet maintenance, repairs, and service histories using computerized fleet management systemsAssist with maintaining the Vehicle Equipment Replacement Program (VERP) recordsOversee preparation of fuel usage and billing reports for internal and external customersEnsure proper handling, recycling, and disposal of hazardous materials and fluids in accordance with environmental regulationsMinimum or Preferred QualificationsMinimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GEDA minimum of three (3) years' experience in the maintenance and repair of auto, medium and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipmentValid driver's licenseAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s)Preferred QualificationsAssociate degree in automotive technology or related fieldMissouri Inspector Mechanical LicenseValid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with acceptable driving recordSupplemental InformationKnowledge, Abilities and Skills Knowledge of:Vehicle and equipment repairPreventative maintenanceHydraulic systemsWelding and fabricationEngine components and operational characteristicsShop equipment and toolsVehicle and equipment lubrication techniquesOccupational hazards and safety practicesVehicle, equipment maintenance and safety regulatory complianceAbility to:Understand and comply with workplace instructions and policiesDemonstrate technical proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining electrical and mechanical equipment/vehiclesSafely operate city vehicles, trucks, and other specialized equipmentEffectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and stakeholdersOrganize and maintain accurate shop and repair recordsCultivate and maintain positive working relationships with individuals encountered in the course of workExhibit self-motivation and the capability to work independently when requiredPossess sensory and cognitive abilities, including audio-visual discrimination, perception, observation, reading, writing, and equipment operationMaintain cognitive capabilities for making sound decisions, prioritizing tasks, and demonstrating intellectual acumenMaintain physical fitness appropriate for job demands, including extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, lifting or carrying heavy objects, and operating equipmentSkills in:Engine and equipment repairPerforming general maintenance proceduresOperating tools and equipmentBasic mathUse of computers and mobile communication devices, including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products and fleet management software experienceSupervision ReceivedWork is performed under the supervision of the Public Work SuperintendentWork EnvironmentPrimary duties of this position are performed in a repair and maintenance shop environmentRegularly exposed to fumes, odors, gasoline, solvents, cleaners, oils, and other related liquidsExposure to inclement weather when conducting field repairsEnvironment includes noise and work with moving objects and vehiclesEssential Physical AbilitiesSufficient ability to regularly stand, walk, and occasionally sit; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; must be able to operate assigned equipment and vehiclesSufficient body flexibility and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations requiring climbing and working on ladders and power lifts;
