Treatment Plant Operator

Specialized work in the operation of a complex water/wastewater treatment plant auxiliary facilities on an assigned shift. Those functions actually required to perform this position, the removal of which would fundamentally change the job. These are intended only as illustrations of various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Conduct laboratory testing for quality control. Maintain log of all operational activities. Inspect pumps, motors, levels, controls general plant condition and wellfields. Monitor plant controls, alarms and instrumentation. Perform Operator level preventive maintenance of plant and equipment. Participates in making minor repairs to mechanical equipment, reports major breakdowns.Informs plant supervisor of mechanical defects.Assists with maintenance, repair and the overhaul of machinery and equipment. Water: Regulates rate of water flow to and from filters.Puts filters into and out of line.Washes filters.General regulates machines adding chemicals to water under treatment.Replenishes machines with various chemicals as needed and reads and changes a variety of charts and meters.Keeps log sheets and prepares operating reports.Maintains proper water pressure and water storage levels as required. Wastewater: Keeps under close observation the physical condition on wastewater under treatment for proper temperatures, color and odors.Operates pumps, agitators, telescope valves, and other equipment in order to treat properly the raw sewage.Make necessary adjustments to chlorinators and other operating machinery and equipment.Reads and graduates flow meter charts and log readings and takes samples for chemical analysis. May be required to operate sludge press operations and drive sludge truck. Attend work promptly and regularly. Perform related work as required. These additional duties may be representative of tasks typically performed by those in a lesser or more advanced job grade. This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City’s Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration. Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignment and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by the City’s Emergency Management Director or individuals designated by the City Manager to assign such functions will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Acquisition of 1.0 to 2.0 continuing education units biannually to maintain state certification. Florida class B Commercial Drivers License for water treatment plant operators only Knowledge of methods and practical water/wastewater treatment and of standards and normal operating procedures applicable to treatment. Knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment. Knowledge of the implications of improper treatment for community health and well-being. Knowledge of general laboratory testing procedures and methods. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, governmental agencies, and the general public. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to inspect machinery and other mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation. Ability to read meters and charts accurately, to maintain records of shift operations, and to perform simple chemical analyses accurately.
