NR Forest Fire Response Lead

Responsibilities Prepare for wildfire suppression by organizing and maintaining equipment, tracking supplies, and winterizing fire suppression gear. Respond to initial attack on wildfires and conduct prescribed burns, operating fire suppression equipment and gathering information for investigators. Lead emergency fire fighters during response operations, protecting the fire scene and completing initial reports. Assist the Area Supervisor with fire prevention activities, directing personnel and helping train firefighters. Operate hand and power tools and endure strenuous physical work under adverse weather and environmental conditions throughout Minnesota. Minimum Qualifications Two months of wildfire response experience or a diploma/associate’s degree in natural resource management with an emphasis in wildland firefighting. Knowledge of wildfire suppression, including initial attack, fire behavior, control, mop up, and fire line safety. Understanding of fire suppression equipment maintenance and operation. Familiarity with state and local fire laws and regulations. Ability to use the Forestry Administrative Area Fire Plan for planning and response. Strong communication skills for accurate information transmission in routine and crisis situations. Skills to recognize reportable events and meet Forestry reporting requirements. Capable of maintaining and organizing fire line equipment for availability during suppression. Proficiency with maps and GPS to locate fires quickly. Capability to operate fire equipment safely and effectively. Ability to coach and direct firefighters for safe suppression and pre‑suppression activities. Valid Class A (Commercial) driver’s license or Commercial Learner’s Permit within six months of hire. Pass the DNR Forestry physical standards annually based on the National Wildfire Coordinating Group moderate fitness level. Completion of required training: Fire Fighter Training S‑130; Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior S‑190; Introduction to Incident Command System I‑100; Human Factors on the Fire Line L‑180; Incident Management System and Introduction IS‑700. Preferred Qualifications NWCG Red Card qualifications: Engine Boss (ENGB), Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4), Tracked Vehicle Operator (TVOP), Initial Attack Dozer Operator (DOZ1), Helicopter Crew Member (HECM), Squad Boss (FFT1), Faller Class B (FALB). Knowledge of the DNR Forestry fire reporting system. Additional Requirements Must possess a valid Class A license or obtain one within six months of hire. Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and participate in the DNR random drug and alcohol test program. Meet the physical requirements and work in environmental conditions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
