Radiologic Technologist
Under the direction of the Department Director, the Radiologic Technologist provides diagnostic general radiography services as needed, with a high degree of quality. Performs examinations in a proficient, courteous, and professional manner so as to favorably promote the services of this department and the philosophy of this hospital in this community. In addition, assumes clerical duties as needed in an effort to ensure the efficiency of the department.
Job Duties/Requirements:
- Workflow: Always makes the Patient the priority, using our system to expedite care and the flow of information to the benefit of our Patients. Accommodates every Patient does not put off work.
- Supplies: Makes judicious use of supplies, and notifies appropriate staff when supplies are low.
- Knowledge and Equipment: Knows the proper use and care of all Department Equipment, fixed and mobile. Has full understanding of the PACS and CR Equipment.
- Digital Data Management: Follow through on every procedure. Verifies that images are sent to PACS. Assure that the notes are entered into PACS. Promptly QC as the study for Completion. Verifies that charges are correct. Treats data as a legal document.
- Radiographic Imaging: Produces quality diagnostic radiographs according to department procedure manual. Confers with radiologist if altering from standard procedure. Completes examinations in a timely manner. Properly labels films so as not to interfere with anatomy. Uses personal lead markers. Is proficient in operating all department equipment as well as portable x-ray machines, C-arm operation. Is knowledgeable in fluoroscopic procedures such as myelograms, arthrograms, EGDs and ERCPs. Can produce diagnostic portable and operating room radiographs. Observes age specific guidelines. It is competent in the injection of contrast material.
- Transporting Patients: Identifies self and department. Explain examinations to the patient. Consistently checks patient I.D. before transporting him. Notifies the nurse's station when taking patient from the floor. Confirms physician's order in the patient's chart and verifies consent if contrast study. Bring a chart when indicated. Properly drape patient with sheets, blankets, etc. Transports patient in a safe manner. Notifies nurse's station when returning patient to floor. Returns chart and conveys patient status and/or information to nurse.
- Protection: Uses appropriate protective devices, lead aprons, lead gloves, lead glasses and film badge while in fluoroscopy. Uses gloves, mask, gowns, and universal infection protections. Use sharps container properly. Uses proper body mechanics.
- Work Habits: Keeps rooms clean and orderly. Wipes table and chest board after every patient. Use a clean pillowcase, sheets and blankets with every patient. Keeps the floor clean. Wipe up spills. Mops when necessary. Replaces sharps containers when full. Restock supplies in rooms. Maintains cleanliness of equipment used in surgery. Wipes C-arm with disinfectant prior to entering surgical suite. Remove trash when full. Is proficient in sterile technique. Consistently uses universal infection precautions and proper body mechanics.
- On Call Procedures: Follows the on-call procedures. Assures that on call response is within policy. Accepts a reasonable quantity of call assignments each month.
- Department Job Assignment: Has accepted a department job assignment. Completes this assignment reliably, and on time throughout the year.
- Provides Clerical Assistance: Files reports, Answers the phones, restocks supplies, cleans rooms. Understands how to check the crash carts and look for expired supplies.
- Age-Appropriate Care: Pediatric: Explains procedure thoroughly to parents and patient (if child is of age to understand). Is knowledgeable in the use of pediatric restraint devices, i.e. Pigg-O-Stat, Papoose Board, sponges and allows parents help in restraining child when appropriate. Utilizes Gonadal Shielding. Utilizes high KVP, low MAS for minimal exposure time and dose to patient. Enlists help from other tech or staff to ensure patient safety while developing films or out of the room. Confers with radiologists to minimize repeat films and exposure to the patient. Speaks calmly to children and reassures their fears. Adolescent: Explains procedure thoroughly to patient and parents, and answers patient questions. Inquires as to the possibility of patients being pregnant (if of childbearing age) prior to procedure. Utilizes Gonadal Shielding. Utilizes high KVP, low MAS for minimal exposure to patient. Recognizes and respects the adolescent patient's modesty and need for privacy. Confers with radiologist as to any specific need or request by the adolescent patient, prior to procedure. Speaks reassuringly to patients. Geriatric: Explains procedure thoroughly to patient and family member or attendee. Answer any questions the patient may have. Demonstrates appropriate safety precautions associated with elderly patients. Sets break on wheelchairs, gurneys, etc., while transferring patients to and from radiology table. Stands close to patient assisting when needed in case of a fall. Replaces restraints removed from patient from exam, i.e. pony-vest, leg and arm restraints, side rail of bed or gurney. Never leave the patient unattended. Appropriate use of pads, sponges, sheets, pillows, blankets, etc. to assure patient comfort and protect skin. Use of slider board to facilitate easier more comfortable transfer. Speak slowly and clearly when giving instructions and frequently inquire as to the comfort of the patient. Reassures confused patients and orients patient to their surroundings. Use of short exposure time to minimize motion and limit time patient needs to suspend respiration. Inform radiologist of special needs or request by the geriatric patient.

Qualifications EDUCATION/TRAINING/ EXPERIENCE: Experience: Two to three years of x-ray training under supervision of a Radiologist preferred with experience in geriatric, adolescent, adult, and pediatrics. Education: Must be at least 18 years of age. General education level. Must have state certification. Required Skills: Written and verbal communications, interpersonal skills. Basic organizational and computer skills. Certifications/ Licenses: Currently registered CRT or CRT eligible. Registered ARRT or ARRT eligible. BLS Certification. CPI is required within 30 days of hire.
