Head Custodian
The job of HEAD CUSTODIAN is done for the purpose of supervising the cleaning and maintenance of the assigned building/worksite. Responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety, and maintenance of the assigned building(s), grounds and equipment. Schedules and oversees work of custodial support, expenditures, building repairs, facility projects, building use and building systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directs custodial staff in the cleaning and maintenance of the assigned building/worksite.
- Create annual custodial cleaning schedule and submit to immediate supervisor for approval, and to each custodian when so approved.
- Assign work and trains other building-custodian under the direction of the immediate supervisor for the purpose of ensuring a well-organized custodial effort and safe, efficient, service-oriented staff.
- Uses both verbal and written communication methods to clearly convey information to administration and both building and Facilities and Operation department staff on all operational, safety, and financial matters (e.g. AHERA inspections, lead paint rules, playground/field inspections, overtime rotation lists inventories, budget report, etc.).
- Attends District Head Custodian meetings for the purpose of maintaining an efficient, well-documented building custodial program.
- Maintains inventory of custodial supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of cleansing supplies for assigned staff.
- Monitors safety of buildings for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students, visitors, and staff.
- Cleans assigned facilities (e.g. classrooms and office areas) for the purpose of maintaining a clean, healthy environment.
- Responds to staff requests and minor emergencies and takes appropriate action for the purpose of ensuring a clean, safe, well-maintained building environment.
- Opens and closes building for the purpose of maintaining a safe, secure facility.
- Cleans and maintains classrooms and offices for the purpose of maintaining a clean, orderly office and classroom environment.
- Maintains a clean, orderly environment in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch for the purpose of ensuring students have a clean, safe and inviting place to eat their meals.
- Assists with approved after school activities (e.g., coordinating access to facilities and equipment, patrolling building and parking lot areas, and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors when present) for the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible community use of district resources.
- Performs minor facility and equipment repairs for the purpose of maintaining the physical condition of the facility and equipment.
- Operates forklift for the purpose of performing efficient building material receiving and shipping function.
- May be required to complete minor painting (e.g. interior touch-up, classrooms, inside building (height of no more than ten (10) feet off floor, etc.) as directed by building administrator based on a tiered scope.
- Work independently with minimal supervision and possess leadership skills
- Required to stand, walk, push/pull, bend/stoop, handle/grasp, twist clime, kneel, crouch, reach, hear, and see.
- Ability to read and comprehend both written and verbal instructions and directions
- Exhibit reliable attendance and punctuality
- Follow all required District and industry safety rules/standards, including wearing required safety equipment.
- Must be able to work varied hours, as necessary.
- May be required to use personal vehicle for District business.
- Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of promoting the efficient operation of the school district.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: none specified.

ABILITY is required to be flexible; work both independently and with others; specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include ability to lift/carry/push fifty (50) pounds.
Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, 45% standing. This job is usually performed in a sometimes wet, generally clean, and healthy environment but may be exposed to seasonal weather variations. Exposure to odor, noise, vibration, dust, chemicals, and other elements, dependent upon immediate task(s).
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Prior job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is preferred. Expertise to perform multiple non-technical tasks required. K-12 Education setting preferred. Public setting/relations experience preferred.
Certificates and Licenses: First Aid and CPR may by required. Valid Washington State Driver's License required. Evidence of automotive insurance required
Required Testing: Job-Related Skills Proficiency Test
Clearances: Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.
Valid driver's license and evidence of insurance. (Must be able to fulfill all traveling requirements of this position, including possessing and maintaining a valid license and automobile insurance, when using a personal vehicle for District business).
Continuing Education/Training: Maintain First aid and CPR may be required
Complete District directed safety awareness training (e.g., asbestos safety, blood-borne pathogens, safe lifting practices, etc.)
