Assistant Port Engineer III

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities) Assist the Port Engineer and Captain(s) to conduct maintenance activities on company vessels and vehicles, thoroughly documenting all activities as required and maintaining a functional record‑keeping history. Assist the Port Engineer and Captain(s) in providing service to the boat and vehicle fleet, with long‑term guest safety, comfort, and cost efficiency in mind. Assist the Port Engineer with inspections of vital and safety systems on our vessel, vehicles, and land facilities. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Assistant Port Engineer I and II team members. Assist the Captains with maintenance activities for the boat crew, emphasizing the value of scheduled routine maintenance. Assist the Port Engineer, Maintenance Manager and/or Transportation Coordinator to ensure vessels and vehicles are maintained within applicable US Coast Guard and US Department of Transportation standards. Assist the Port Engineer in keeping critical spares in stock, maintaining and organizing adequate supplies of key maintenance and repair parts on hand to ensure periodic maintenance can happen without waiting for parts and that downtime is minimized during summer months. Provide assistance to the Port Engineer, Maintenance Manager, and Transportation Coordinator when working with vendors, both parts and service, to ensure we take advantage of our buying power. Coordinate with Assistant Port Engineer I and II, and the Land Facilities Maintenance Technician to ensure that the Phoenix Avenue warehouse is maintained with safety and functionality in mind. Assist the Port Engineer and Transportation Coordinator with maintenance and repair of the company’s vehicle fleet. Provide assistance to the Land Facilities and Fox Island Maintenance Technicians regarding all aspects of the Fox Island operation, including but not limited to electrical and freshwater systems. Assist with land facilities maintenance as required. Skills + Abilities Advanced understanding of internal combustion engine operation, cooling systems, both AC and DC electrical systems, hydraulic systems, fresh and seawater plumbing systems, and marine electronics. Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills regarding mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures. Advanced understanding of diagnosing and repairing marine propulsion systems and control systems. Thorough understanding of vessel systems and how they integrate across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components. Ability to devise cost‑effective, durable solutions to often complex mechanical problems. Knowledgeable in vehicle maintenance and general mechanical systems. SAE certification is preferred but not required. Strong fabrication and carpentry skills. Ability to operate small heavy equipment required to maintain fleet and land facilities. Strong organizational and administrative skills, with high accuracy in parts and record‑keeping tasks. Ability to prioritize work, manage competing demands, and operate with a high degree of independence. Leadership capability, with a collaborative and supportive approach to team development. Strong communication skills and a proactive, solutions‑oriented mindset. Deep commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Work Environment This role operates in a marine and maintenance setting, working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The Assistant Port Engineer III collaborates closely with engineers, operations staff, and occasionally guest‑facing teams to support seamless operations. The environment is fast‑paced, hands‑on, and team‑oriented, with a strong focus on delivering safe and enjoyable guest experiences. The work may involve wide‑varied schedules, requiring flexibility to meet operational demands. Physical Abilities Physical ability to climb ladders, crawl, kneel, bend, twist at the waist, and stand on uneven surfaces. Must be able to push, pull, carry, and lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds on a regular basis. Capacity to enter and operate in confined spaces. Ability to operate power tools. Capability to use a breathing apparatus when necessary. Ability to operate company vehicles. Minimum Qualifications 5 years of experience in marine maintenance or equivalent. High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical certification or formal training as a marine technician, heavy equipment, automotive, or a related field strongly preferred. Proven experience troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Experience in commercial vehicle maintenance. Parts inventory and purchasing experience. Knowledgeable in inventory management. Able to obtain a DOT Medical Card or CDL.
