Fire Protection Engineer

A multidisciplinary engineering and design firm specializing in healthcare facilities is hiring four experienced Fire Protection Engineers across its Colorado and North Carolina teams. These are senior-level opportunities for engineers who can independently lead fire protection and related mechanical system design for technically complex hospital and healthcare projects. Selected engineers will have significant project ownership, including opportunities to serve as Engineer of Record (EOR), coordinate with multidisciplinary architectural and engineering teams, and provide technical guidance to junior staff. Healthcare and hospital project experience is a key requirement for these positions. What You’ll Do Lead the design of fire protection and plumbing systems for healthcare facilities. Design automatic sprinkler systems, fire protection piping, fire pumps, plumbing systems, domestic water heating, and medical gas systems. Perform engineering calculations, system evaluations, equipment selections, and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). Prepare and review engineering drawings, construction documents, specifications, and project-specific technical documentation. Serve as Engineer of Record on assigned projects. Ensure designs meet applicable requirements, including NFPA 13, NFPA 20, NFPA 99, ASHRAE standards, and the International Building Code (IBC). Conduct field investigations, site surveys, field assessments, and construction-phase inspections. Coordinate closely with architects, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, contractors, clients, and other project stakeholders. Provide technical direction, quality review, and mentorship to junior engineers and design professionals. Required Qualifications Candidates should meet the following requirements: 6+ years of professional engineering experience preferred; exceptional candidates with slightly less experience may be considered Demonstrated experience designing systems for hospitals and healthcare facilities Current Professional Engineer (PE) license Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) license NCEES registration Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution Experience working at a senior technical level and/or serving as an Engineer of Record Strong knowledge of fire protection, plumbing, life-safety, and healthcare engineering requirements U.S. Citizenship required due to federal contracting requirements Ability to travel approximately 20%, depending on project needs Technical Skills Strong working proficiency with: Revit AutoCAD MEP Trace 3D Microsoft Office applications Candidates should be comfortable independently producing, reviewing, and managing complex engineering documentation. Preferred Qualifications Additional credentials that are highly valued include: Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) LEED accreditation Green Globes Other sustainability or high-performance building credentials These are full-time, primarily in-office positions based in Colorado and North Carolina. The employer offers some flexibility based on project requirements and business needs, but candidates should view these opportunities as predominantly office-based positions. Compensation $160,000–$180,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
