GENERAL DUTIES

Completes non-teaching projects or complex work in support of a Campus or University administrative or academic department. This work is generally of a temporary nature and requires specialized experience or expertise.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Haywood Burns Program at CUNY School of Law is seeking a Part-Time Archivist to manage the extensive papers and materials associated with the legacy of W. Haywood Burns, which are currently housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The collection includes material documenting Burns’ work with the National Conference of Black Lawyers, CUNY School of Law, the National Lawyers Guild, and his role in drafting South Africa’s interim constitution. The Archivist will ensure these records are preserved and made accessible for researchers, activists, students, and legal scholars exploring Burns’ contributions to civil and human rights, in preparation for a memorial event for W. Haywood Burns in the fall of 2026 at CUNY School of Law. The position starts in Summer 2026 and runs through September 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collection Processing: Arrange and describe seven primary series: Personal, Correspondence, Legal, Writings, Remembrances, and Organizations.

  • Legal Contextualization: Create finding aids for high-stakes litigation files, including materials related to the Angela Davis defense and the Attica uprising.

  • CUNY Law School: Manage and index records related to the law school’s founding, mission, and early iterations.

  • International Human Rights Curation: Manage records documenting Burns’ anti-apartheid work and his monitoring of trials in Northern Ireland and South Africa.

  • Metadata & Standards: Utilize ArchiveSpace or similar platforms to generate EAD-compliant finding aids.

  • Institutional Legacy: Collaborate with CUNY School of Law, former faculty and students and others to preserve administrative records from Burns’ tenure as Dean.

  • Public Engagement: Develop digital and physical installation highlighting Burns’ impact on "law in the service of human needs."

Skills & Additional Qualifications

  • Education: Background in Library and Information Science, Journalism, or History with a concentration in Archival Studies.

  • Historical Expertise: Deep familiarity with 20th-century civil rights and political movements.

  • Ethical Sensitivity: Ability to handle records involving sensitive civil rights litigation and state repression with professional discretion.

  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with descriptive standards such as DACS and MARC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background in legal history or public interest law.

  • Experience processing collections that include audiovisual materials or born-digital media.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate:$51.94. After 9/1/2026 contractual increase hourly rate will be $53.76

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
