Mother's Outreach Network (MON) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit advancing racial justice and economic equity through liberatory legal representation, guaranteed income advocacy, and mother-led policy work. MON centers the lives and leadership of Black mothers navigating the family policing system. We believe poverty is not neglect — and that every family deserves the tools to stay together and thrive.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Associate is MON’s sole communications position — the person in this role owns the organizational voice. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Communications Associate leads day-to-day content production and communications strategy across all platforms, translating MON’s mission into compelling narratives that amplify the voices of the mothers we serve. This is a fast-paced, high-impact role where your work is immediately visible — on our platforms, in our advocacy, and in our community. The Communications Associate works closely with the Executive Director and across all program, legal, and development functions.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Content Production & Scheduling

• Develop and execute MON’s monthly content calendar across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Bluesky
• Write and schedule social media content, newsletters, direct mail, and organizational announcements
• Support production of ED thought leadership including talking points, op-eds, and public statements
• Maintain MON’s organizational voice across all channels with fidelity to our liberatory framework

Social Media & Community Management

• Manage day-to-day publishing, scheduling, and community engagement across all active platforms
• Monitor comments, messages, and mentions; escalate sensitive issues to the ED same business day
• Produce and edit short-form video and Reels using MON-provided footage
• Manage secure community and team communications via Signal
• Deliver monthly analytics reports with performance data and key takeaways

Fundraising & Donor Communications

• Lead communications for fundraising campaigns including end-of-year appeals, giving days, and donor campaigns
• Develop donor-facing content including impact reports, stewardship emails, and acknowledgment language
• Support narrative development connecting MON’s programmatic work to donor and funder priorities

Advocacy Campaign Communications

• Support advocacy campaign communications including messaging development, content sequencing, and audience targeting
• Coordinate with legal and policy staff to ensure all external communications are accurate and mission-aligned
• Assist with press releases, media list maintenance, and earned media coordination

Organizational & Event Communications

• Develop communications for MON convenings and events including invitations, programs, and promotional materials
• Support content development for grant communications and organizational reporting
• Maintain and update MON’s website content using WordPress

Design & Production

• Design graphics and visual assets using Canva or equivalent tools consistent with MON brand standards
• Maintain an organized content library of photos, graphics, and templates

QUALIFICATIONS

Must Have:

• 1–3 years of experience in communications, content creation, social media, or a related field
• Strong writing skills with ability to adapt tone and format across platforms and audiences
• Experience managing social media platforms in a professional or organizational setting
• Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Gmail, Slides, Sheets)
• Experience with Canva or similar design tools
• Experience with a social media scheduling platform (Later, Buffer, or Hootsuite)
• Experience with an email marketing platform (Mailchimp or Constant Contact)
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage deadlines independently
• Deep alignment with MON’s mission and liberatory framework

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field — equivalent professional experience considered
• Experience in nonprofit, advocacy, or policy communications
• Familiarity with WordPress or a comparable CMS
• Experience with a nonprofit CRM platform (Little Green Light or similar)
• Familiarity with Signal for secure team and community communications
• DC community ties preferred

Nice to Have:

• Familiarity with Google Analytics or native platform analytics tools
• Experience with Airtable or a comparable content management tool
• Short-form video editing experience
