Department Summary The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences offers a BA degree program in Sociology (concentrations in Community Change, Race and Ethnic Studies, and Women, Gender, & Sexuality) and Minors in Asian American Studies, Sociology, Sociology of Education, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies. With approximately 700 majors and 40 faculty members, SISS is a growing and vibrant department community. Brief Description of Duties The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS) at San Jose State University invites highly qualified and motivated applicants for a pool of part‑time teaching appointments. The performance of instructional responsibilities extends beyond duties in the classroom and includes activities such as: preparation for class, evaluation of student performance, syllabus preparation and revision, holding regular office hours, review of current literature and research in the subject area, regular assessment of course and program learning outcomes and pedagogical improvements. Responsibilities Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, bimodal, in‑person, or hybrid). Required Qualifications Master’s degree in Sociology or related field from an accredited university. Commitment to, and demonstrated potential for, teaching excellence as evidenced through satisfactory performance in prior academic appointments and/or advanced knowledge of the subject matter to be assigned. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a collegial atmosphere of shared governance. Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned. Ability to teach and evaluate adult learners. Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work. Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population. Preferred Qualifications Doctorate in sociology or related field from an accredited university. Experience teaching in the area. Experience with Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Experience teaching at a CSU. Compensation Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. To learn more about range placement, please see University Policy S21-2. Anticipated starting salary: L-A / Range 2 - $5,507 - $5,959 L-B / Range 3 - $6,221 - $7,481 L-C / Range 4 - $6,825 - $9,431 L-D / Range 5 - $8,593 - $10,347 Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full‑time AY faculty—part‑time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester.
