This position combines the commercial responsibilities of a Commodity Manager with the supplier development and new product introduction responsibilities of a Materials Program Manager. The role serves as the primary interface and is heavily partnered with Product Management, Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and the supplier community to ensure supplier capabilities, technologies, capacity, quality, and cost structures support both current business objectives and future product roadmaps. The Commodity & Materials Program Manager is responsible for identifying, developing, qualifying, and managing suppliers that provide components, assemblies, OEM products, finished goods, materials, and manufacturing technologies critical to the company’s growth strategy. The role leads supplier engagement from early concept development through production launch while driving supplier performance, cost competitiveness, risk mitigation, and long‑term strategic partnerships. Common responsibilities for both Commodity Management and Materials Program Manager Develop and execute comprehensive commodity strategies aligned with business and product objectives Partner closely with Product Management and Engineering to ensure supplier capabilities align with product roadmaps Lead supplier scouting activities for emerging technologies, materials, manufacturing methods, and strategic capabilities Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers to support future product development or OEM initiatives Manage supplier portfolios for assigned commodities, materials, and OEM products Negotiate commercial agreements, contracting, pricing, inventory strategies, service levels, and long‑term supply arrangements Coordinate supplier readiness plans and qualification activities to support development milestones Develop contingency plans and alternate sourcing strategies for all scenarios within NPI, HVM, and OEM spaces Routinely conduct supplier capability assessments covering technical expertise, manufacturing readiness, scalability, quality systems, and financial stability Manage supplier transitions, product transfers, and end‑of‑life activities to meet customer expectations Lead supplier business reviews and performance management processes Other duties as assigned Commodity Management Establish long‑term sourcing roadmaps that support product, manufacturing, and business growth requirements Monitor market conditions, capacity constraints, cost drivers, and emerging technologies Recommend supplier consolidation, diversification, and strategic partnership initiatives to leadership and executive teams Lead supplier business reviews and performance management processes Product Development & NPI Support Support concept development, design reviews, supplier selection, prototype builds, pilot production, and launch readiness activities Drive supplier participation in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Cost (DFC), and Design for Supply Chain (DFSC) initiatives Supplier Performance & Continuous Improvement Establish supplier scorecards and performance metrics In partnership with Quality and Engineering organizations, drive improvements in quality, delivery, responsiveness, innovation, and cost Drive corrective action activities and supplier development initiatives Partner with Quality and Operations to improve supplier process capability and manufacturing performance Promote continuous improvement and operational excellence throughout the supplier network Risk Management & Supply Continuity Identify supplier, material, geopolitical, financial, and operational risks and develop mitigation strategies in cooperation with leadership and executive team Support business continuity planning and supply assurance initiatives Monitor supplier financial health and operational stability In partnership with Compliance, ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, sustainability, and ethical sourcing requirements Commercial Leadership Conduct cost modeling, should‑cost analysis, benchmarking, and total cost of ownership evaluations Drive cost reduction, margin improvement, and working capital optimization initiatives Support annual planning, forecasting, and budget development activities Collaborate with Product Management and Finance to improve profitability and business performance Skills and Experience You’ll Need as a Commodity Manager/Materials Program Manager: Required Bachelor’s degree in engineering, supply chain, operations, or related discipline 6+ years of experience in commodity management, supplier development, strategic sourcing, program management, product development support, or related disciplines Experience sourcing and qualifying suppliers Strong commercial negotiation and supplier relationship management skills Experience in cross‑functional projects involving Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Product Management Strong analytical, financial, communication, and project management skills Preferred Experience within optics, defense, industrial manufacturing, electronics, and OEM products Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, supplier quality systems, and NPI processes Experience supporting products from concept development through production launch CPSM, CSCP, PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent certifications MBA or advanced technical degree Work Environment for a Commodity Manager/Materials Program Manager: Work is performed in a normal office environment with occasional exposure to manufacturing environment. Expected travel will be 20%–30% (domestic and international).
