Job Location: Division of Financial Operations – Accounting Administration, 1789 West Jefferson Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007 Posting Details Salary: $51,393.89 – $55,725.70 annually Grade: 19 Closing Date: Open Until Filled Job Summary At the Department of Economic Security (DES), you will join a team that helps Arizonans thrive. The Accountant 1 position requires applying advanced accounting principles to a federal tax information system, analyzing financial transactions, reconciling reports, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The role includes examining fiscal documents for accuracy, gathering data, writing reports, and monitoring funds from the federal government to ensure proper matching of state and federal expenditures. Remote work may be available within Arizona based on business needs. Job Duties Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other documents to assess accuracy, completeness, and compliance with reporting and procedural standards. Use automated accounting systems and applications to retrieve and review data files, analyze information, and track revenues and/or expenditures. Examine and verify a variety of fiscal transactions, including billing invoices, payments, transfer recoupments, payroll, and other financial documents. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) In-depth knowledge of GAAP and government accounting practices. Proficiency in federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, agency manuals, and policies. Strong analytical, interpretive, and communication skills for financial data. Technical skills in automated accounting systems, including PC and mainframe operations. Excellent oral and written communication to maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. Ability to learn federal, state, and agency laws and regulations governing child support enforcement. Multi‑tasking and thriving in a fast‑paced, performance‑driven environment. Meet performance measures and data reliability goals. Selective Preference(s) Two (2) years of complex work experience in bookkeeping, accounting, financial reporting, or related specialties. Pre-Employment Requirements Valid Bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field. Valid fingerprint clearance card issued pursuant to ARS 41‑1758.07 for employees accessing federal tax information. Valid driver’s license and completion of required driving training and record checks for employees required to operate a vehicle for state business. Successful background and reference checks; completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
