CERTIFIED ALCOHOL & DRUG COUNSELOR (CADC)

Compensation: $20.00 – $24.00 per hour
Reports To: Program Director / Clinical Supervisor (or Designee)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) provides direct counseling services, recovery support, case management assistance, and therapeutic interventions to clients receiving substance use disorder (SUD) detoxification and residential treatment services at Butte Horizon Detox. The CADC plays a critical role in supporting clients throughout the treatment process by conducting assessments, facilitating individual and group counseling sessions, assisting with treatment planning, monitoring client progress, and promoting long-term recovery.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the CADC supports the delivery of ethical, evidence-based, and recovery-oriented services while maintaining compliance with DHCS regulations, Title 9 requirements, Joint Commission standards, and facility policies.

This position may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts based on program needs. Full-time and part-time opportunities are available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLIENT ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT PLANNING

• Conduct client screenings, intake interviews, assessments, and orientation activities.

• Assist in identifying client strengths, needs, abilities, preferences, and treatment goals.

• Participate in development, implementation, and updating of individualized treatment plans.

• Collaborate with clinical staff, nursing staff, medical providers, and leadership regarding client progress and treatment needs.

• Monitor client progress toward treatment goals and document outcomes appropriately.

• Assist clients in developing recovery plans, discharge plans, relapse prevention plans, and aftercare strategies.

COUNSELING & RECOVERY SUPPORT

• Facilitate individual counseling sessions within the scope of certification and training.

• Facilitate psychoeducational groups, process groups, recovery groups, and life-skills programming.

• Provide education regarding addiction, recovery, relapse prevention, coping skills, emotional regulation, communication skills, and healthy lifestyle development.

• Support clients in identifying barriers to recovery and developing healthy coping strategies.

• Promote client engagement, accountability, motivation, and participation in treatment activities.

• Provide recovery-oriented support and encouragement throughout the treatment process.

• Assist clients in developing independent living skills, problem-solving skills, and community support connections.

GROUP FACILITATION

• Facilitate therapeutic and psychoeducational groups on topics including:

• Relapse Prevention

• Recovery Skills

• Coping Strategies

• Emotional Regulation

• Communication Skills

• Stress Management

• Life Skills Development

• Recovery Maintenance

• Health and Wellness

• Substance Use Education

• Maintain attendance records and documentation related to group participation.

• Ensure groups are conducted in accordance with facility policies and evidence-based practices.

CASE MANAGEMENT & CLIENT ADVOCACY

• Assist clients in identifying resources and services necessary to support recovery.

• Coordinate with community resources, treatment providers, and referral agencies as appropriate.

• Assist clients with discharge planning and transition services.

• Advocate for client needs while maintaining professional boundaries and ethical standards.

• Support continuity of care through effective communication and coordination with treatment team members.

DOCUMENTATION & COMMUNICATION

• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete client records in accordance with DHCS, Title 9, Joint Commission, and facility requirements.

• Complete progress notes, treatment plan updates, discharge documentation, group notes, assessments, and other required documentation within established timeframes.

• Document client participation, progress, behavioral observations, and significant events.

• Maintain confidentiality and security of client information.

• Communicate effectively with clients, families (when authorized), treatment team members, referral sources, and community partners.

• Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, case reviews, staffing meetings, and clinical consultations.

PROGRAM SUPPORT & QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

• Participate in chart reviews, audits, accreditation activities, inspections, and quality assurance initiatives.

• Assist with program development and implementation of treatment services.

• Support facility compliance efforts and performance improvement activities.

• Provide feedback regarding program effectiveness and client needs.

• Assist leadership with special projects and clinical initiatives as assigned.

SAFETY & THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT

• Assist in maintaining a safe, respectful, and therapeutic treatment environment.

• Monitor client behavior and report concerns to appropriate staff.

• Assist with crisis intervention, de-escalation, and behavioral support as appropriate.

• Follow facility policies regarding incident reporting, emergency response, client safety, and crisis management.

• Maintain awareness of client safety concerns and communicate issues promptly.

FLEXIBILITY & OTHER DUTIES

• Perform other duties as assigned to support clinical, program, and facility operations.

• Adapt to changing needs within a residential detox and treatment environment.

• Collaborate with medical, clinical, compliance, and support staff to maintain client safety and program integrity.

• Assist with audits, surveys, inspections, accreditation activities, and licensing reviews as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Residential detoxification and treatment setting.

• Exposure to individuals experiencing active withdrawal, early recovery, and co-occurring behavioral health conditions.

• May require day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

• Requires the ability to respond appropriately to client crises, behavioral concerns, and emergency situations.

• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.

• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Active Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) certification through a DHCS-recognized certifying organization (CCAPP, CAADE, or equivalent) required.

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in behavioral health, psychology, social work, counseling, human services, or related field preferred.

• Knowledge of substance use disorders, addiction treatment, recovery principles, and relapse prevention strategies.

• Strong communication, counseling, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and client confidentiality.

• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team.

• Strong organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail.

• Prior experience in a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment program, detoxification facility, residential treatment setting, behavioral health environment, or related healthcare setting is strongly preferred.

• Experience facilitating psychoeducational groups, recovery groups, and treatment planning activities preferred.

• Familiarity with ASAM Criteria and levels of care preferred.

• Experience working with co-occurring mental health disorders preferred.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Current, active CADC certification through a DHCS-recognized certifying organization required and must be maintained in good standing.

• Current CPR certification preferred and may be required based on position assignment.

• Tuberculosis (TB) clearance required in accordance with public health guidelines.

• DOJ Live Scan background clearance required prior to unsupervised client contact.

• Valid California driver's license required if transportation duties are assigned.

COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Completion of required onboarding, orientation, and annual compliance training.

• Adherence to DHCS, Title 9, Joint Commission, and facility policies and procedures.

• Compliance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality requirements.

• Compliance with professional ethics requirements, counselor code of conduct, and standards of practice applicable to addiction treatment professionals.

• Maintain all required certifications, continuing education, and professional requirements necessary to remain in good standing.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING REQUIREMENT

Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment drug screening conducted in accordance with applicable California and federal laws.

As a safety-sensitive position, employees may be subject to drug and alcohol testing under reasonable suspicion, post-incident, or as otherwise permitted by law.

Refusal to submit to required testing or confirmed violation of facility policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination, consistent with applicable law.
