Youth Services Librarian

The Town of Johnson is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Youth Services Librarian. The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for creating an atmosphere for children, young adults and families which instills and inspires a love of reading and creating exploration. This is a service position to our community which operates under the policies adopted by the Library’s Board of Trustees. The Youth Services Librarian receives general supervision from the Library Director. Duties include building and maintaining a children’s and youth book collection, cataloging, organizing and processing books, assisting patrons, managing youth budget with the assistance of the Library Director, opening and closing the library as needed, keeping daily statistics and answering the phone. The Youth Services Librarian also plans, promotes and presents a wide variety of programs for children and young adults including story time, after school programs, summer reading program, school visits and special events. All Library staff should approach each patron with respect, hospitality and a desire to make their experience comfortable, meeting their needs within reasonable expectations and library policies. Requirements Enthusiasm for the role of public libraries as community hubs, centers of learning and transformative institutions. Bachelor’s degree, plus 3 years or equivalent work experience working with youth. Ability to give friendly, helpful service and communicate effectively with patrons and staff. Good working knowledge of the principles of professional library work, particularly youth services. Requires sound judgement, initiative, tact and courtesy, attention to detail and the ability to work well with a small staff, adjusting to best meet the needs of the patrons. Requires a thorough knowledge of children’s literature and appropriate practices for working with youth. Ability to construct a wide variety of programs that meet the needs and spark the interest of the kids in our community. Ability to work in a noisy, busy environment. Strong oral and written communication and computer skills. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. Must pass a background check. This hourly position will be approximately 25 hours per week and the wage range is $20-$23 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, plus a generous benefits package.
