PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT I - NICU/PICU

Job Summary Under the administrative supervision of the Pediatric Department Chair and in collaboration with the Attending Physician, provides exceptional care to a diverse patient population with complex, acute, critical, and chronic health conditions. The Physician Assistant will practice in the Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, step‑down unit, and general Pediatric service settings where patients require complex monitoring, high‑intensity intervention, or continuous vigilance. Typical Duties Provides independent care for patients from neonate to age 18 as delineated in the collaborative agreement. Provides cross coverage in the Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, step‑down unit, and general Pediatric services. Performs independent pediatric/neonatal physical assessments; obtains comprehensive health histories and physicals; documents progress notes; prepares discharge summaries as required. Identifies significant health and medical risk factors and documents them in the EMR. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, distinguishes normal variations from abnormal deviations, and refers patients with abnormal results to a physician in collaboration with the physician. Develops treatment plans in collaboration with the physician. Prescribes and dispenses legal drugs and controlled substances as delegated. Acts as a liaison and collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and house staff to ensure quality and safe patient care. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as central vascular access, lumbar punctures, endotracheal intubation, chest tube replacement, peripheral vascular access, conscious sedation, intra‑osseous access, NIPPV, and IPPV. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission (ARC) Physician Assistant program. Certified Physician Assistant or ability to obtain certification within two weeks prior to starting employment. Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain Illinois state license within two weeks prior to starting employment. Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or ability to obtain certification prior to starting employment. Valid Illinois Controlled Substances License (ILCS) or ability to obtain license within six months of starting employment. Valid licensure with the Federal DEA or ability to obtain license within six months prior to starting employment. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred Qualifications Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) certification. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to lead, teach, and work with patients and coworkers of diverse backgrounds. Strong customer service and empathy skills. Good computer, typing, phone, and email etiquette skills with strong response times. Analytical, organizational, problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and conflict‑resolution skills. Ability to interpret complex organizational systems; prioritize, plan, and organize projects and tasks. Excellent vision and hearing; ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant noise, odor, and temperature. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed. Attention to detail, accuracy, and precision. Physical, mental, and muscular coordination; capacity for physical exertions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, prolonged standing, walking, and operating equipment. Physical and Environmental Demands Functions within a healthcare environment; responsible for adherence to all hospital and department‑specific safety requirements, including PPE, hand washing, sanitizing, engineering controls, and other safety precautions. Veteran Preference Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served at least six months of continuous service.
