Certified Nurse Aide

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) is responsible for assisting residents with activities of daily living, providing basic nursing care, and helping maintain a safe and clean environment under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. This role is essential in ensuring that care aligns with the philosophies of the facility and nursing department.

Responsibilities

• Perform resident care activities including answering call lights, serving and collecting food trays, and feeding residents as needed.
• Measure and record food and liquid intake as well as all output, including drainage systems as ordered.
• Assist residents with daily living activities such as dressing, bathing, and personal care including oral hygiene and pericare.
• Administer routine treatments and procedures, including warm and cold applications, and assist registered nurses or licensed practical nurses with more complex treatment procedures.
• Collect specimens (e.g., stool, urine, sputum) and take and record vital signs, weight, and height.
• Provide general nursing care such as positioning, lifting, and turning residents, and assisting with bedpans and urinals.
• Prepare resident rooms and beds for incoming admissions and ensure work areas are clean and safe.
• Report any changes in residents' condition or behavior to the supervising nurse.
• Maintain compliance with established facility and departmental policies including safety, quality assurance, and infection control procedures.
• Attend required meetings and educational programs to stay updated with facility information.
• Exhibit visual and auditory abilities to monitor the physical and mental status of residents.
• Effectively communicate with residents, healthcare team members, and visitors.
• Perform medium to heavy lifting, push or turn residents and equipment, and engage in frequent bending, walking, and standing.

Education/Experience/Licensure

Must be certified through the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Working Environment

Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. Physical demands include exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and 25-50 pounds of force consistently to move objects.
