Learn more at The Product Engineering Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for engineering teams supporting product, process, and packaging technologies across the Johnson & Johnson Vision network. This role leads multi-site, cross-functional initiatives to deliver robust new product introductions (NPIs), design transfers, lifecycle management, and sustained improvements in quality, cost, delivery, safety, and compliance. The Product Engineering Manager establishes engineering strategies, technology roadmaps, and key performance indicators (KPIs), and ensures execution through disciplined project governance, effective resource and capital management, and strong people leadership.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESDefine and communicate engineering strategy (e.g., manufacturing and technology roadmap) aligned to business goals; establish and monitor product/process KPIs and ensure improvement programs are in place to meet targets.Provide technical leadership and oversight for multi-brand engineering portfolios, including design transfers and integration of NPIs and sustained lifecycle management improvements.Lead cross-functional and cross-site development of compelling business cases for complex engineering initiatives; drive prioritization, timing, and implementation approach for changes and improvements.Provide governance and execution leadership for engineering projects and change control programs, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, regulatory requirements (FDA/ISO), staffing plans, and budget commitments.Develop, recommend, and manage capital investment plans and project spending budgets; perform concept analysis of capital projects to support future development and capacity/technology needs.Establish and drive data-driven decision making by enabling access to reliable insights (e.g., data visualization and process performance reporting) to improve accuracy and speed of decisions.Ensure robust technical problem solving, investigation support, and timely closure of CAPAs, audit findings, and non-conformances; lead corrective and preventive actions to address quality, technical, and manufacturing issues.Oversee the creation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of engineering specifications, procedures, and standards (including packaging specifications and processes where applicable) to ensure compliance and operational effectiveness.Promote operational excellence by continuously improving business processes to reduce cost, improve compliance, and increase efficiency across engineering operations.Build and lead high-performing teams: recruit, develop, coach, and inspire engineering professionals; set quarterly individual goals aligned to organizational objectives; provide mentoring and development opportunities for direct reports and broader teams.Provide technical consultation and guidance on conceptual evaluation, design, validation, and qualification of new equipment, controls, packaging systems, and manufacturing processes; participate in technical design reviews for machine requirements and product/process specifications.Manage external interfaces as needed, including supervising/leading work with vendors, outside designers, consultants, and contractors for off-the-shelf and custom solutions.EXPERIENCE & EDUCATIONBachelors degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline required.Typically requires 8+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience; leadership experience in a regulated manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.Operations/manufacturing experience (production supervision/front-line leadership) preferred.Experience working with vendors to select, source, quote, and procure off-the-shelf and custom designed components preferred.Experience working in ISO and FDA regulated environments preferred.Packaging knowledge (standards and test methods such as ASTM, ISTA, ISO, and applicable regulatory requirements) is preferred where role scope includes packaging.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES AND AFFILIATIONSStrategic leadership, strong business acumen, and ability to influence across all organizational levels.Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong facilitation and stakeholder management capability.Strong project/program management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, deliverables, and budgets with disciplined governance.Demonstrated people leadership: talent development, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and team building.Strong problem-solving skills with ability to acknowledge issues quickly, identify solutions, and drive closure of actions.Ability to lead effectively in a matrix environment and coordinate cross-functional teams to deliver results.LOCATION & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTSRole location is site dependent.
