Part-Time Aquatics & Sports Recreation Leader III

The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Norwalk is seeking motivated individuals to fill two part-time Recreation Leader III positions in the Aquatics Division and one part-time Recreation Leader III position in the Sports Division. As a Recreation Leader III, you will work alongside full-time recreation staff to coordinate and direct various recreational programs and activities. In addition, you will be responsible for supervising the work of paid staff and volunteers, preparing reports and correspondence, and working flexible hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Duties For Aquatic positions only: Coordinate aquatics programs, including special events at the Norwalk Aquatics Pavilion, swim leagues, social and cultural activities, and City-wide events. Coordinate recreation programs, including special events, sports leagues, social and cultural activities, and city-wide events. Organize, conduct, and promote programs for the use of recreation center facilities, and provide a program for the use of facilities by organized groups. Assist in evaluating and recommending program activities. Prepare reports and correspondence. Supervise and evaluate staff. Officiate and instruct in games; teach fundamentals of play and sports conduct in recreational activities. Assist in coordinating citywide contract classes. Plan and provide a comprehensive schedule of activities and schedules. Order program supplies; maintain financial records. Assist in program evaluation. Perform various administrative and support duties as assigned. Knowledge of Advanced methods, practices, and equipment used in providing and maintaining an effective recreational and special activities program; recreation planning and administration; the policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the recreational facilities and equipment. Knowledge of aquatics programming and safety of persons using the Norwalk Aquatics Pavilion and its amenities. Ability to Develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; supervise, assign, train, and organize children and adult activities; keep accurate records; work with people having varied socio-economic standings; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; organize groups for participation. Train and direct aquatics staff including lifeguards, instructor guards, and senior guards. Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include two (2) years of college coursework in recreation or a related area and four (4) years of paid or volunteer experience as a leader in a recreational activity. Highly desirable certificates & experience: CPO (Certified Pool Operator), LGI Lifeguard Instructor Certification, Water Safety Instructor Certification, and two (2) years of paid or volunteer experience as a lifeguard and/or oversight of pool operations. Computer skills are required. Depending on the assignment, possession of or the ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record may be required. The ability to speak Spanish, knowledge of ActiveNet, When to Work Software, and the ability to create flyers are highly desirable. This position corresponds to the Aquatics Recreation Leader III role.
