Lab Customer Service Team Overview The Lab Customer Service team at Henry Ford Hospital offers a unique opportunity for Medical Laboratory Scientists to step away from traditional benchwork and engage in a dynamic, problem‑solving role. This position involves triaging phone calls, processing orders, managing client communication, tracking shipments, handling critical lab values, and working closely with the sales team, pathologists, and outreach business partners. MLS professionals act as a crucial link between customers and the laboratory, troubleshooting issues across departments and facilitating specialized testing approvals. With exposure to various lab systems, including Sunquest, Copath, CRM, and ATLAS, employees gain a comprehensive understanding of lab operations. Key Responsibilities Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunologic, microscopic, and/or bacteriological test procedures on laboratory specimens using manual or automated techniques and information systems for diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease. Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership to improve processes, resolve problems, and evaluate instrument performance and quality control results to ensure accuracy and reliability. Correlates results with other lab data and disease states, identifies technical or pharmacologic causes of unexpected results, and performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of equipment and information systems. Complies with institutional policies, including quality assessment, safety, environmental, infection control, and patient confidentiality. Participates in quality assessment activities such as proficiency testing, data collection for quality assurance, safe work practices, committee participation, and regular competency assessments. Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework aligned to the specific laboratory discipline and meeting ASCP Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist. Six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge to perform laboratory functions. Preferred Certifications Certification at the technologist or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency such as ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, or HEW.
