Organizational Relationships This is a faculty position responsible to the Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine. General Duties The Assistant Professor, CFA will focus the majority of his/her clinical activity on the Inpatient Service. He/she must possess strong communication skills to interact with patients, families, hospital staff, and other faculty. As the Department of Hospital Medicine operates 24/7/365, nocturnal shifts will also be supported by the hospitalist physician. The Assistant Professor provides clinical expertise in patient care management and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in Onco-Hospital Medicine. The incumbent must be fully ambulatory, have excellent manual dexterity, hand‑eye coordination, visual and auditory acuity, and be able to perform the job functions. He/she should possess outstanding analytical skills to judge medical problems and advise patients on care improvement methods, as well as emotional and psychological stability to manage patients and families compassionately and positively. The Assistant Professor will also participate in clinical research studies and be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiating referrals, and appropriate follow‑up. Other Duties and Responsibilities I. Administration Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested; attend meetings, provide verbal feedback, and review committee documents. II. Education/Teaching Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for residents and students who rotate through the Department of Hospital Medicine. Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, requiring interaction with colleagues and travel to meeting locations across campus. III. Research Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities aligned with department goals; synthesize information and instruct research support personnel. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms for clinical research; may require grant application forms, budget development, and analysis. IV. Clinical Practice within Hospital Medicine Represent the Department of Hospital Medicine in local, regional, state, and national matters related to Onco-Hospitalist Medicine; may require travel outside the Houston area. Practice clinical medicine in accordance with standards of the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, balanced with other academic activities. Provide complete and thorough history and physical examinations; perform invasive procedures as dictated by specialty; demonstrate physical stamina and clear verbal communication. Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Provide physician staffing for the Department of Hospital Medicine at a level commensurate with other internists of similar training and experience. Review ICD‑9 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within five working days. Complete patient documentation within institutional time frames, requiring clear dictation. Correspond with physicians regarding patient care and treatment via calls or written communication. Keep abreast of current approaches in patient management through continuing education conferences. Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone or written communication. Act as a role model practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty. Must be able to work within a context of intense interpersonal relationships with physicians, patients, and subordinates. Required Qualifications MD degree from an accredited medical school or equivalent; completion of residency training in an approved American Residency Program; board certification in Internal Medicine (or to be obtained within three years); licensure as a physician in the State of Texas. Experience Minimum of two years as an instructor or five years post‑degree with a combination of clinical, scientific, or GME trainee experience. Compensation and Benefits Target base salary of $268,953 to $306,173.
