JOB SUMMARY:

The OB/Nursery RN will perform the primary functions of a registered nurse in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients in the department. They are responsible for antepartum, intrapartum, post-partum, and newborn care. They are responsible for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments. Participates in performance improvement activities.            

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for managing all assigned personnel, supplies, and equipment in the department.
• Oversees the daily workflow of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassess as needed. This includes neonates and general population.
• Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform resuscitation according to NRP guidelines.
• Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
• Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
• Formulate a teaching plan based on learning needs and evaluate effectiveness of learning.
• Demonstrate knowledge of fetal monitoring and identify FHR patterns and treats appropriately based upon AACOG standards.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to co-workers and physicians.
• Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
• Coordinates and supervises patient care.
• Demonstrates ability to assist physician with procedures in labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn nursery.
• Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
• Documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
• Adheres to dress code.
• Uses computerized clock time system.
• Follows departmental and hospital wide policies and procedures.
• Completes hospital-wide in-services and completes annual educational requirements,
• Attends all departmental staff meetings.
• Keeps equipment clean and maintained according to hospital and departmental policies.
• Maintains HIPPA and confidential guidelines of all information regarding employees, patients, and medical staff.
• Reports to work on time as scheduled and keeps absences to a minimum.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
• Must possess the ability to deal with personnel, patients, visitors, and government agencies in a tactful manner.
• Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
• Must possess computer skills.
• Must be able to work independently and be a self-starter.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

• Completion of RN program from an accredited college.
• BCLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications.
• Successful completion of Fetal Monitoring and Breastfeeding Courses.
• Previous Labor and Delivery experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
• Must be able to speak the English language.
• Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
• Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, personnel, and support agencies.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

·         Consistently follows all established Safety procedures, incident/accident protocol and precautions or universal precautions when performing duties relating to work area.

·         Follows good infection control practices at all times and is familiar with Infection control policies, procedures PPE guidelines and guidance relevant to area of work.     

·         Practices proper body mechanics and ergonomics at all times.

·         Follows established plans, policies and procedures during emergencies, such as fire evacuation, fire drills and actively participates in emergency exercises/disasters etc. 

·         Reports all Life Safety maintenance issues, defective equipment, etc. through the Environmental Services work order system.
