CORRECTIONAL OFFICER SERGEANT (Sykesville Academy)

Job Summary The incumbent instructs a designed curriculum within the assigned Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy to ensure compliance with standards established by the Professional Development and Training Division and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. The role serves as the first contact for newly hired Correctional Officers, offering mentorship and coaching to resolve logistical or programmatic issues and ensuring curriculum is delivered in a professional, adult‑based learning environment. Grade CORR 0005 Location of Position Maryland Police and Correctional Training Center, 6852 4th Street, Sykesville, Maryland 21784 Minimum Qualifications Education: High School diploma or high‑school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation. Experience: Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving custody and security of adult inmates. Notes: The educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission according to Article 8‑209. Additional education: 60 credit hours may substitute one year of required experience, provided at least 15 credit hours are in criminal justice or related social sciences. Equivalent State experience: experience in other correctional classifications with daily contact with inmates and comparable salary to Correctional Officer II may substitute required experience. Military Service: U.S. Armed Forces experience in correctional classifications or specialty codes equivalent to Correctional Officer II may substitute required experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Limitations on Selection This is a lateral position for current and promotional Sergeants of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services who are on the eligibility list. Candidates must be a Certified Academy Instructor and obtain Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification within one year of hire. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Motor Vehicle Operator’s License: Required for duties that involve the operation of a motor vehicle. Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with passenger and air‑brakes endorsements: Required for duties that involve operating buses for inmate transportation. Special Requirements Successful completion of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission probationary training for a correctional officer, including U.S. citizenship or resident alien status, minimum age of 21, completed background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination. Employees hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 must complete prescribed Entrance Level Firearms Training and demonstrate proficiency in safe firearms use on a periodic basis. Employees will be subject to 24‑hour call‑in; a telephone number must be provided for availability. Employees are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with MD regulations.
