SERGEANT POLICE OFFICER SUPERVISOR - STIU/MDH POLICE

Position Information Location: MDH Spring Grove Hospital Center, 55 Wade Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228. Grade: SLE 0005. Main Purpose of Job The main purpose of this full-time position is to serve as a front‑line supervisor to Police Officer I and Police Officer II staff. The supervisor will conduct and oversee criminal and internal investigations, managerial inquiries, and patient abuse allegations. The role requires Maryland Police Training Commission Certification and the ability to enforce all applicable Federal, State, and local laws in a fair and impartial manner. Applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from their state of residence and be DIP trained to operate State vehicles. Strong investigative skills and abilities, as well as good writing and oral communication skills, are essential. All supervisors must follow the chain of command; information flows through the chain (Sergeant → Lieutenant → Captain → Deputy Chief → Chief of Police) and must not be bypassed. Responsibilities Supervise Police Officer I and II staff. Conduct and oversee criminal investigations, internal investigations, managerial inquiries, and patient abuse allegations. Ensure enforcement of laws in a fair and impartial manner. Maintain a valid driver’s license and operate State vehicles. Apply strong investigative, writing, and oral communication skills. Adhere to the chain of command and procedural flow of information. Respond to on‑call duties during weekends, holidays, and off‑hours as required. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education. Three years of experience as a certified law‑enforcement officer. Possession of a Police Officer certification required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application. Valid driver’s license in the State of Maryland and ability to operate State vehicles. U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age. Satisfactory background investigation, including a criminal history check. Oral interview and physical examination. Demonstrated practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis (if required to bear firearms). Eligibility for recertification within the past three years if previously certified. Potential requirement for a special police commission as specified by public safety regulations. Availability to provide a phone number for call‑in duties and to respond to on‑call requests. Substitution of one year of experience with an Associate of Arts degree in law enforcement, criminology, or related social sciences, or with one year of U.S. Armed Forces military service as a non‑commissioned officer in protective service or law‑enforcement specialties. Licenses, Registrations & Certifications Police Officer certification required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Eligibility for recertification within the past three years if previously certified. Potential requirement for a special police commission under Public Safety Article, Section 3‑209. Special Requirements Must be able to respond to on‑call duties during weekends, holidays, and off‑hours. May be required to bear firearms and demonstrate proficiency periodically. Subject to substance abuse testing as required by state regulations. Able to provide a phone number for call‑in purposes.
