Police Officer Candidate/Police Officer I

The Gaithersburg Police Department is seeking qualified individuals to fill the positions of Police Officer Candidate and Police Officer I. The department offers a variety of assignments, advanced training, and a strong commitment to service, integrity, and respect. Responsibilities Attend and successfully complete the Maryland certified law enforcement training academy (for candidates). Receive instruction in department organization, chain of command, and regulations. Assist with administrative or clerical tasks when not attending academy training. Participate in in‑service and special training programs as assigned. Operate a patrol vehicle and respond to calls for service, addressing community complaints and conducting foot patrols. Investigate and enforce violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities, and disturbances of law and order. Respond to radio dispatches, investigate crimes, traffic accidents, and domestic disputes. Issue traffic citations, serve warrants and summonses, make arrests, and testify in court. Direct traffic, provide police escorts, and perform residential and commercial checks. Fill out arrest records, prepare reports and documents, and transport prisoners. Qualifications Must be 21 years old at the time of appointment to Police Officer I. United States citizen or permanent legal resident and honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Excellent physical and mental condition as determined by comprehensive examinations. Pass vision standards: color vision, acuity, binocularity, stereopsis, and other vision skills. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent accredited education. Good moral character; no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions that carry a sentence of one year or more. Must not be a current user of illegal drugs. For Police Officer I only: currently certified as a Police Officer through the MPCTC or hold a certification issued within the last 3 years (MPCTC number required). For Police Officer I only: currently employed by or previously employed by a Maryland law‑enforcement agency. Salary & Benefits Starting annual salary for a Police Officer Candidate is $71,750 (FY 2027) and for a Police Officer I with less than 6 months of prior experience is $71,750 (FY 2027). Salaries increase to $74,261 – $84,395 for officers with 7 months or more of experience. The top pay‑out for a Police Officer III is $125,046 (FY 2027). Hiring bonus: $5,000 for entry‑level officers after successful completion of the two‑year probation period; $10,000 for Maryland‑certified officers.
