Job Overview Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Responsibilities Meet minimum production standards for department Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols while ensuring the utmost quality Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications Identify problems and special handling cases Trim tissue for specific re‑gross requests when requested in a timely manner Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment Exercise judgment in evaluating and reporting results Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor Cross‑train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab Follow applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including safety and quality procedures. Maintain clean and organized work area. Restock supplies as needed. Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation Consult with senior peers on non‑complex tasks to learn through experience Perform other duties as assigned Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required Bachelor's degree in science, biology or other life sciences strongly preferred Coursework in anatomy/physiology required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and histology procedures and equipment Attention to detail and organization with ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment Ability to work independently and as part of a team Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information Proficiency in English language allowing participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data and understanding written directions Positive, can‑do attitude Utilize personal computer skills, including fast and accurate typing, to input data efficiently Working Conditions Stationary position, must remain stationary for up to 2 hours Constantly operate a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40 lbs.
