Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.
CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi, and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.Reporting to the Dean of the College of Nursing, the Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Track will be responsible for the overall administration, management, growth, and continuous improvement of the FNP Program; and will have oversight of the academic, faculty, student, accreditation, retention, and administrative functions of the FNP curriculum of study, designed to be delivered as an innovative immersion learning experience utilizing the executive-education format. The Director will assist in strategic planning, program growth, student recruitment and retention, curriculum development, mentoring of FNP faculty, and teaching selected graduate courses. The FNP Director will maintain a teaching load as assigned, prepare or contribute to research and scholarly writings, and participate in University, College, and community committees as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- To manage and oversee clinical placement, student recruitment, registration, progression, and FNP program completion including:
- Assisting with student advisement, coordination of matters regarding a student’s progress in the program and student discipline
- Arranging clinical placements
- Site visits to new clinical agencies
- Prepares appropriate Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) forms for on-going faculty and site approval
- Requests clinical placement.
- Develop and implements strategies to support student recruitment, enrollment growth, retention, progression, and on-time program completion.
- Monitors student persistence, academic progress, and attrition trends; identifies barriers and implements interventions to improve retention and student success.
- Collaborates with faculty, advisors, and student support services to promote student engagement, academic achievement, and retention throughout the program lifecycle.
- Participates in ongoing advisement and monitoring of students, faculty and FNP program to ensure compliance with California BRN regulations
- Orienting part-time CON clinical faculty assigned to the FNP program
- Ensures that full-time/part-time faculty files are current regarding RN licensure, FNP Certification, CPR, malpractice, continuing education, and health documentation.
- Coordinates and ensures completion of annual updates of faculty and student handbooks related to the FNP program.
- Coordinates the annual evaluation of FNP faculty.
- Uses program data and outcomes to evaluate enrollment, retention, graduation, certification, and other key performance indicators for continuous program improvement.
- Develops and implements annual program goals related to growth, retention, student success, and academic quality.
- Recommends and supports initiatives that strengthen program visibility, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
Represents the Nursing Program:
- Promote positive relationships with clinical agency personnel and other departments on campus
- Attends professional nursing and community meetings
Maintains faculty responsibility:
- Maintains teaching load as assigned
- Participates in research and scholarly activities
- Member of the Nursing Program and College Committees as assigned
- Serve on the Dean, Directors, and Coordinators Committee
- Represents and promotes the FNP Program internally and externally to support program growth, community partnerships, student recruitment, and clinical pipeline development.

- Retention Rate Target: ≥ 85%
- On-Time Program Completion Rate: ≥ 80%
- Student Satisfaction (Program Evaluation): ≥ 85% positive ratings
- Implement data-driven interventions for at-risk students
- Ensure equitable and compliant evaluation processes
Clinical Education Oversight:
- Ensure compliance with California Board of Registered Nursing Clinical Practice guidelines
Clinical Placement Requirements:
- Maintain sufficient, diverse, and appropriate clinical placements
- Ensure all preceptors are qualified and approved
Program Evaluation and Outcomes:
The Director is accountable for achieving and reporting the following benchmarks:
- Certification Pass Rate (FNP): ≥ 90% first-time pass rate
- Graduation Rate: ≥ 80%
- Employment Rate (within 6–12 months): ≥ 80%
- Retention Rate: ≥ 85%
- Conduct annual program evaluation per California Board of Registered Nursing
- Use outcomes data for continuous quality improvement
- Submit required reports to the California Board of Registered Nursing
External Relations and Workforce Development:
- Build partnerships with healthcare and behavioral health organizations
- Support workforce pipeline development in primary care and mental health
- Align program outcomes with regional and state workforce needs
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with student recruitment
- Lead initiatives related to program growth, student retention, and student success.
- Partner with enrollment, marketing, and academic support teams to strengthen recruitment yield and retention outcomes.
- Analyze program trends and prepare reports/recommendations related to enrollment, retention, progression, and completion.
- Promote external relations with professional organizations
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
EDUCATION:
- Master’s degree in nursing with preparation as a FNP required.
- An earned doctorate in nursing (PhD or DNP) or in a related field preferred.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in California or eligible for California RN licensure
- National current certification as a FNP and eligible for certification as a nurse practitioner with the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years teaching in pre- or post-licensure nursing program and one year as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:
- Knowledge of nursing educational program administration.
- Ability to develop and implement strategies for program growth, student retention, and student success.
- Ability to analyze program outcomes data and use findings to drive planning and improvement.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across academic and administrative units to support enrollment growth and retention initiatives.
- Knowledge of the principals and practices of nursing, including nursing guidelines set for the board of Registered Nursing.
- Knowledge of curriculum development.
- Knowledge of teaching and clinical practice in the nursing field.
- Knowledge of current developments, trends, and complexities within nursing and the healthcare industry.
- Knowledge of health-related education in a global economy.
- Ability to recruit for, market, and grow an educational program while advancing student retention and success.
- Ability to develop a strategic plan.
- Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities.
- Demonstrated leadership in teaching, research, and public service.
- Demonstrate a willingness to perform and a commitment to extra-curricular responsibilities on behalf of the department, college, and University.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, computer, and communication skills .
Supervise:
- All FNP Faculty (Full-time, part-time; and clinical adjuncts)
- One FNP program clinical coordinator
SUPERVISORY ACTIONS:

- Planning and evaluating performance.
- Providing on-the-job training.
- Reviewing and checking work.
- Hiring new employees.
- Determining salary actions.

- Promoting/demoting employees.
