Bioinformatics Programmer

Department Description The Department of Neurology is the largest recipient of NIH awards among neurology departments in US medical schools and has many notable senior faculty including nine members of the Institute of Medicine, six members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, three members of the National Academy of Sciences, and a Nobel laureate. Job Summary We are seeking a bright, hardworking staff bioinformatician with strong communication and organizational skills to support ongoing research projects related to analysis of phage immunoprecipitation, metagenomic, transcriptomic (bulk and single-cell), and immune repertoire (bulk and single-cell) sequencing data. The role requires experience in data science, proteomics, open-source software, custom scripting for high-throughput sequencing mapping and alignment, and integration of data pipelines with public repositories. The candidate will also manage large genomics datasets, write computational solutions when existing tools are inadequate, and help resolve bugs in software. Knowledge of PhIP‑Seq assay and antigen discovery in autoimmune and infectious diseases is desirable. Key Responsibilities Utilize complex bioinformatics concepts to analyze, interpret, or create complex biological or research data. Design, develop, debug, and use computer programs. Conduct advanced bioinformatics programming and test new algorithms that interact with related databases. Apply existing algorithms, techniques, and statistical methods for moderately complex data analysis. Assist with development and implementation of changes to operational systems and databases. Perform complex data modeling, performance and integration testing, and build user interfaces for internal and external constituencies. Recommend changes in development and maintenance of analysis algorithms, tools, and infrastructure. Maintain web pages. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational programming, or a related area and a minimum of three years of experience or equivalent training. Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures. Working knowledge of application programming and web development. Working knowledge of databases. Project management skills. Knowledge of modern biology and an applicable research field. Interpersonal skills for working with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels. Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in bioinformatics or computer science. Self‑motivated, quick learner who meets deadlines and demonstrates problem‑solving skills. Knowledge of application and data security concepts.
