Industrial Maintenance Mechanic - West Point

About the Role Working as part of a team, this position involves applying maintenance experience to perform high‑level repairs on a variety of rotating mechanical equipment, including biosolids decanting blowers, influent and effluent pumps, biogas scrubbing compressors, gearboxes, conveyance systems, and multiple piping systems. What You Will Be Doing Perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul of complex mechanical machinery such as pumps, motors, grinders, blowers, compressors, centrifuges, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and gravity belt thickeners, independently or with minimal guidance. Install, maintain, and repair large plumbing and piping systems used in a wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards. Fabricate, modify, and repair plant piping and other heavy equipment using welding equipment, cutting torches, and plasma cutters; contribute to design improvements when appropriate. Operate a variety of hand, power, and pneumatic tools—including grinders, drill motors, drill presses, band saws, ironworkers, table saws, and hydraulic presses—applying expert knowledge of proper techniques and shop practices. Lead or mentor less experienced mechanics or helpers, providing guidance and support on complex tasks and troubleshooting. Perform other duties as assigned, supporting the overall reliability and safety of plant operations. Qualifications You Bring Extensive knowledge of the safe use, care, and operation of hand, power, and pneumatic tools, and specialized shop equipment for mechanical maintenance and repair. Strong knowledge of plumbing techniques and principles, including installation, maintenance, and repair of large‑scale wastewater facility piping systems. Proficient welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, as well as cutting and fabrication for heavy equipment and plant piping; comprehensive understanding of pumps and pumping systems. Skill in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, schematics, manuals, and technical instructions; ability to prepare clear written and oral documentation of work performed. Knowledge and experience with rigging, hoisting, and safe operation of overhead cranes and lifting devices for moving heavy equipment. Ability to lead or mentor less experienced mechanics or helpers, providing guidance on complex mechanical tasks and troubleshooting techniques. Proficiency with computers and software for equipment diagnostics, maintenance tracking, and technical documentation. Physical Requirements Position requires flexibility to work varied hours and report during adverse or inclement weather conditions. Involves field and shop work with lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders in and out of tanks, and working in confined spaces. Workers regularly operate heavy machinery, rigging, and power tools, and work around high noise levels, noxious odors, and potentially slippery or uneven surfaces. Must be able to safely perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, including standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching while completing maintenance, repair, and installation work. Workplace Exposure Work performed outdoors and indoors in an industrial wastewater environment under all weather conditions. Employees are regularly exposed to chemicals, biohazards, and high noise levels. Position requires entry into confined spaces and use of appropriate personal protective equipment, including respirators, as needed. Employees must follow safety protocols to minimize exposure to potential hazards while performing maintenance, repair, and operational tasks. Working Conditions Work Location: West Point Treatment Plant – 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199. Work Schedule: Full‑time, 40‑hour work week.
