Washington D.C. based candidates are preferred but not required. For local candidates, the position requires weekly in-office work (3 days) in our Washington D.C. office under a hybrid working model.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Vice President, Membership & State Relations leads LeadingAge's membership growth, retention, and coordinates state partner relationships with LeadingAge staff, in support of LeadingAge's mission to be the trusted voice for aging. The SVP leads the Membership & State Relations team, driving towards annual targets for recruitment and retention, in collaboration with LeadingAge state partners. This individual ensures strong and effective relationships with state partners to drive member satisfaction and value.
Working closely with state partners, members, and colleagues across LeadingAge, the SVP builds strong relationships with members and represents LeadingAge's mission, programs, services, and policy developments to members and states, reinforcing the LeadingAge brand. Guided by the voice of members, the SVP helps ensure LeadingAge delivers value to members.
The SVP serves as a partner to the President and CEO to ensure strong relationships with large and multi-state member organizations (MSOs). The SVP reports to the President and CEO and serves as a member of the senior leadership team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
TEAM LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
- Lead, manage, and develop the Membership & State Relations team.
- Set clear targets for state engagement, membership growth and retention, track progress and results, with clear expectations and accountability.
- Build a cohesive, high-performing team that brings state and member-based relationship work together with LeadingAge national support and coordination.
- Adhere to high levels of transparency, reporting and accountability for delivering on work plans.
MEMBER GROWTH & RETENTION
- Set the direction for LeadingAge's membership and state relations strategy and turn organizational strategy into individual work plans for team members.
- Drive overall performance on net member growth across the full continuum of membership.
- In partnership with Communications & Marketing, grow member engagement and assess member value through communication metrics.
- Recommend actions to Senior Leadership team to ensure that LeadingAge meets or exceeds member expectations.
- Identify and act on growth opportunities focused on member development.
- Welcome new members and leadership in member organizations, making sure each one hears from LeadingAge promptly.
STATE PARTNERS
- Coordinate LeadingAge involvement with state partners.
- Support states in achieving their goals and in maximizing value to members.
- Support the development of new state partners and affiliations.
- Participate in state partner board retreats and conferences, as appropriate.
MULTI-STATE ORGANIZATIONS (MSOs)
- Serve as a partner to the President and CEO on LeadingAge's efforts to advance multi-site and multi-state member relationships, supporting the executive-level work and coordinating across teams.
- Maintain a concierge-like approach and engagement that is consistent across every MSO.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP & REPORTING
- Keep the CEO and LeadingAge senior leadership team informed about membership performance, member gains and losses, developments in the states, MSO relationships and emerging issues.
- Represent the membership and state relations function in LeadingAge strategic planning and other senior-level work as needed.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION
- Work closely with teams across LeadingAge (policy, education, research and programs, communications, finance, business development) to ensure the work is aligned and we are bringing the full strength of LeadingAge to members and state partners.
- Collaborate with the LeadingAge State Partner Services (LASPS) team to identify opportunities to support states with administrative functions, data analysis, meeting preparation, and logistics.
- Collaborate with Finance team to ensure accurate and timely billing of member dues, adhering to agreed upon policies and processes.
- Collaborate with Information Technology/Data Services to ensure accuracy of data on members, assuming responsibility for up to date standard and agreed upon administrative data on every member.
ACCOUNTABILITY & KEY METRICS
- Monitor progress against annual targets for member growth, retention, MSO retention and engagement and state partner relations. Targets are reflected in annual work plans, supported in the budget and reported on a quarterly basis to the Board of Directors.
- In addition to reports on targets, a written quarterly report to the President and CEO on overall performance, key trends, and emerging issues.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; advanced degree preferred.
- Fifteen or more years of progressively responsible experience, including at least five years in a senior leadership or people-management role with a focus on membership.
- Direct experience in aging services or a closely related field (long-term care, healthcare, senior housing, or related state or federal policy work).
- Experience leading distributed, field-based, or remote teams, with a track record of driving performance and building cohesion across locations.
- Experience managing senior-level external relationships, including with multi-site and multi-state provider organizations, association executives, and senior policy and government officials.
- Strong understanding of association management, governance, and how national and state organizations work together.
- Demonstrated leadership, relationship, and collaboration skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to represent LeadingAge at state and national events as a leader and a speaker.
- Working knowledge of association technology, including CRM and membership databases, virtual collaboration tools, and data analysis tools.
- Comfort with data, including reading member, dues, and engagement data and turning it into strategy, performance management, and reporting.

- May be required to move about frequently in the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, attend meetings, etc.
- May require standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time during meetings and conferences.
- Must be able to communicate in large gatherings and conduct meetings with technology so others will understand.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary range for this full-time, (37.5-hour work week), exempt, D.C. based position is $197,000 - $211,000. Salary offered may vary depending on relevant factors as determined by LeadingAge, which may include, but are not limited to, background and experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, certifications and licensures, internal equity, geographic location and other organizational needs.
For full-time positions, we offer:
- Unlimited Vacation after successful completion of the introductory period; 15 hours of Volunteer Time; 22.5 hours of Personal Time.
- Accrue 12 days of sick leave per year, to maximum of 60 days or 450 hours.
- The full health & wellness benefits package includes medical, dental, short- and long-term disability and life insurance with generous employer contributions to medical, dental and vision premiums.

After you have successfully completed one year of service, LeadingAge will match up to 3% of your own per pay period contribution.
