Journeyman Electrician

Position Title Journeyman Electrician Position Summary The Journeyman Electrician is part of the Facilities Management Department and reports to the Master Electrician Supervisor. The role provides journeyman‑level skills and expertise in the installation, maintenance, preventive maintenance, remodeling, repair, servicing, and operation of the university’s electrical systems from 120 volts up to 480 volts. Responsibilities include assembling, installing, and repairing circuitry, switchgear, distribution systems, wiring for electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment, as well as planning layouts and installations. For full details, refer to UIW’s Human Resources webpage. Job Duties Respond to and perform service calls for work orders and preventive maintenance. Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment. Troubleshoot electrical systems to identify problems and repair as needed, following detailed operational and maintenance procedures. Run/pull wire and install conduit; support other trades such as HVAC, plumbing, etc. Inspect and test electrical systems and components to identify hazards, defects, and needs for adjustment or repair. Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety using instruments such as a multimeter, battery, buzzer, and oscilloscope. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and electrical code specifications for layout determinations. Maintain a clean and safe work environment and adhere to applicable safety procedures. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and detailed inspection of electrical systems. Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit‑breaker panels from 120 volts up to 480 volts. Support the annual “Light the Way” event. Maintain and document maintenance records, logs, and work‑order forms. Keep current knowledge of the National Electrical Code and its application. Stay informed of changes in operational procedures, new equipment, and related equipment; collaborate with other trades, staff, and personnel; report unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and take appropriate actions. Serve as lead electrician in the absence of the Master Electrician. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency with the National Electrical Code and local codes. Strong proficiency in commercial/industrial electrical practices and safety, and ability to use diagnostic tools and measuring devices. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and submittals. Good knowledge of generators, transformers, and switchgear. Comprehensive knowledge and experience of lock‑out/tag‑out program, including OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Consistency in following written and/or oral instructions. Ability to learn and use an electronic work‑order system. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer‑service skills. Ability to work in a team environment and independently. Ability to operate a forklift, boom lift, and scissor lift. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Adherence to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA. Required Education High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Required Work Experience One (1) year of skilled/journeyman‑level commercial/industrial electrical experience since obtaining a Journeyman License. Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years of skilled/journeyman‑level commercial/industrial electrical experience since obtaining a Journeyman License. Technical trade school certification in the electrical field. Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations Current Journeyman Electrician License issued by the State of Texas, maintained throughout employment. Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record and at least 21 years of age (required to drive for UIW). Work Hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with departmental flexibility. Hours may adjust for emergency calls, shift work, overtime, and other university needs. Physical Demands Use/wear Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions and typical occupational hazards in a physical plant and construction environment (elevated and confined spaces, attics, sub‑floors, trenches, machine rooms). Exposure to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or other hazards, including laboratory biological and chemical hazards. Hand‑dexterity to safely use operative hand tools of the trade. Good hearing for safety alarms and sirens. Frequent reach overhead, climb, kneel, crouch, or crawl; work while climbing and balance on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Operate a boom‑lift bucket. Regularly lift up to 35 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Wear and maintain uniforms properly.
