Senior Scientist, AI Applications - R&D Oncology

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Senior Scientist, AI Applications, R&D Oncology to join our Data Science and Digital Health team (DSDH). The role focuses on developing and delivering artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) scientific applications for oncology drug discovery and development, leveraging large language models (LLMs) and advanced data science techniques across the R&D lifecycle. Key Responsibilities Drive hands‑on technical delivery of advanced AI/ML oncology R&D research as an individual contributor. Collaborate with oncology R&D and data science leaders to translate business opportunities into research plans. Develop and optimize multimodal reasoning systems that integrate large‑scale structured and unstructured data to derive actionable conclusions. Create novel agent memory architectures to enable persistent knowledge retention and context‑aware decision‑making across extended discovery workflows. Prototype and evaluate innovative approaches for uncertainty quantification and reliability assessment in AI‑driven scientific reasoning. Act as a domain expert, articulating emerging AI/ML approaches and their practical applications to team members. Benchmark agent performance against human expert decisions and existing computational methods, publishing results in leading journals and conferences. Establish engineering best practices across AI prototyping, including architecture patterns, documentation standards, quality gates and reproducibility criteria. Contribute to the overarching AI strategy and enable scaling and deployment of tools for the broader R&D community. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in AI/ML or a related field (e.g., computer science, machine learning, data science, applied mathematics, statistics) with at least two (2) years of post‑doctoral or industry experience. Expertise in advanced mathematics such as Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification, information theory, causal inference, graph neural networks or similar. Proficient with open‑source agentic frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, DSPy, mem0) and deep learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow). Strong programming skills in one or more languages, preferably Python. Self‑motivated, collaborative, able to work independently and within diverse, multidisciplinary teams. Preferred Qualifications Understanding of the drug discovery pipeline and familiarity with biological data types; experience in oncology research. Strong grasp of statistics and model‑validation methods applicable to AI performance assessment. Experience with cloud hosting solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure). Location The position is located in Spring House, PA (preferred), with alternate campuses at Cambridge, MA and San Diego, CA (La Jolla). Compensation & Benefits Base salary range: $109,000 to $174,800, along with an annual performance bonus in accordance with applicable plan guidelines.
