Mechanical Designer II

Our client, an established manufacturer of engineered equipment , is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer II to join its Engineering team in Charlotte, NC .

This position is responsible for the detailed mechanical design of equipment and assemblies from concept through fabrication. The Mechanical Designer II will work closely with Engineering, Project Management, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and field teams to ensure designs meet project specifications, schedules, quality standards, and manufacturing requirements.

The role offers the opportunity to work directly with the teams that fabricate, machine, assemble, and install the equipment being designed.


Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed 3D mechanical designs and models using SolidWorks
• Create accurate fabrication-level drawing packages
• Utilize top-down and assembly-driven modeling techniques
• Design mechanical equipment, weldments, and assemblies with a strong focus on accuracy, functionality, and manufacturability
• Apply appropriate drafting standards to drawings and documentation
• Complete design calculations as required
• Work with power transmission equipment , including motors, gearboxes, chain drives, shafts, and bearings
• Support Project Managers in the preparation of technical submittal packages
• Ensure design deliverables meet project schedules, specifications, milestones, and quality requirements
• Work closely with fabrication, machining, and assembly teams to address technical and manufacturing issues
• Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Customer Service, and field installation teams
• Support field measurements, installation, and troubleshooting as needed
• Participate in cross-functional teams focused on product improvements
• Effectively manage design responsibilities across multiple projects simultaneously

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in 3D mechanical design/modeling , preferably using SolidWorks
• 4+ years of experience designing mechanical equipment, weldments, and assemblies
• Experience with top-down and assembly-driven modeling
• Strong knowledge of drafting standards and fabrication-level drawings
• Strong understanding of mechanical equipment design with excellent attention to detail
• Experience with power transmission equipment , including motors, gearboxes, chain drives, shafts, and bearings
• Ability to complete mechanical design calculations
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Desire to continue developing technical knowledge and skills
• Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Expert-level 3D design experience and/or Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) preferred
• 2+ years of AutoCAD/2D design and detailing experience is a plus

Preferred Experience

• Knowledge of fabrication processes such as bending, punching, welding, and machining
• Experience with material handling systems, including conveyors and bulk storage
• Experience within the municipal water and wastewater industry
• Experience with electrical power, instrumentation, and controls
