Emergency Response Displays mechanical aptitude and situational awareness on emergency scenes and in training exercises. Maintains operational readiness, operates safely beyond responsibilities, and applies technical knowledge and skills to enhance emergency scene operations. Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements Must be at least 18 years old Valid Class C California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record Ability to obtain a DMV Firefighter Endorsement within six months of employment Current California EMT certification or eligible National Registry EMT certification Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent (Healthcare Provider Level) Physical Demands Requires sustained physical exertion during emergency response, including walking, running, kneeling, crouching, and crawling on uneven, wet, slippery, or unstable surfaces. Requires strength and dexterity to lift, carry, push, and pull loaded stretchers, gurneys, and medical equipment, up to 200+ pounds with assistance. Requires ability to reach above the head and below the waist, often in confined spaces. Requires manual dexterity for medical equipment operation and patient care procedures, including CPR. Requires visual acuity to read gauges, monitors, and patient indicators in varied lighting. Requires hearing acuity to communicate over radio equipment. Requires ability to sit for extended periods while operating an emergency vehicle and to work extended, irregular, or rotating shifts under physically and mentally demanding conditions. May be exposed to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and combative individuals. Working Conditions Works in a combined station and field environment with extended, irregular, or rotating shifts. During emergency incidents, works in outdoor and indoor environments with intermittent to frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions. Operates ambulances and other department vehicles safely in emergency and non‑emergency situations, including Code 3 responses, and is exposed to significant risk in heavy‑traffic areas such as freeways and roadways. Responds to fire‑related and other hazardous incident scenes carrying risk of severe injury or death. Frequently works in close proximity to patients in confined spaces, including ambulance interiors, residences, bathrooms, and vehicle collision sites. Regularly exposed to bodily fluids, communicable and infectious diseases, and bloodborne pathogens through direct patient contact and emergency medical procedures. May encounter combative, unpredictable, intoxicated, or psychologically distressed individuals, with associated risk of physical assault. Regularly exposed to traumatic, emotionally distressing, and high‑stress situations involving serious injury, illness, or death. Exposed to prolonged and repeated high‑decibel noise from sirens, in‑vehicle radio equipment, and emergency scene operations.
