Maintenance / Janitor (Astoria Corps)

Job Responsibilities

Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in all assigned areas, including hallways, stairwells, offices, and common spaces.

Clean and disinfect restrooms, ensuring supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper) are adequately stocked.

Wipe down surfaces, including desks, countertops, windows, and mirrors.

Empty trash and recycling bins, replacing liners as needed.

Remove and dispose of waste according to facility guidelines.

Monitor and report any maintenance issues such as leaks, broken equipment, or facility damage.

Perform basic repair tasks such as replacing light bulbs and minor fixture repairs.

Ensure cleaning equipment and tools are properly maintained and stored after use.

Follow proper cleaning protocols to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.

Use appropriate cleaning products, equipment, and protective gear.

Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations, reporting any hazards to supervisors.

Assist with deep cleaning tasks, such as carpet cleaning, floor waxing, and window washing.

Support special event setup and breakdown, including moving furniture or equipment.

Participate in seasonal cleaning tasks as required (e.g., snow removal from entrances).

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Prior experience in janitorial or custodial work is beneficial but not required.

Ability to operate cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers and vacuums.

Basic knowledge of cleaning supplies and safety practices.

Good physical stamina and ability to lift/move objects up to 50 lbs.

Attention to detail and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.

Excellent communication skills to interact with staff, supervisors, and facility occupants.

Ability to follow instructions and maintain a positive, professional attitude.
