Nature of Work

This class is part of the Social Services Case Management Job Family . Incumbents provide social services counseling and assistance to clients in areas such as public assistance, support services, child welfare, and medical or psychiatric programs. Responsibilities may include conducting home visits, providing information, training and counseling to clients, supervising shelter home residents, and preparing service materials.

This position is responsible for providing social services assistance to clients through a variety of methods.

Typical Class Responsibilities

1. Provides Social Services Counseling and Assistance
2. • Provides social services counseling and public assistance.
   • Assists clients with child and family welfare, medical, and psychiatric programs.
   • Assists clients in securing economic aid and psychiatric services.
   • Supports child protection efforts and provides counseling to families.
   • Supervises shelter residents and performs related social services duties.
3. Conducts Foster Home Inspections
4. • Performs home inspections for prospective foster parents.
   • Evaluates home safety equipment and general safety conditions.
   • Reviews chemical and hazardous-material compliance.
   • Assesses pet safety and animal behaviors.
   • Reviews prescription medication storage and related safety concerns.
   • Verifies access to first-aid supplies.
   • Assesses alcohol-related concerns.
   • Reviews sleeping arrangements and designated sleeping areas.
5. Conducts Foster Parent Orientation and Training
6. • Conducts foster parent orientation sessions.
   • Presents general information regarding program rules, policies, and expectations.
   • Prepares training and orientation materials.
   • Prepares materials for annual client meetings.
7. Maintains Casework Records and Reports
8. • Maintains accurate documentation of caseload information.
   • Updates medical records and client database information.
   • Prepares casework reports and other required documentation.
   • Maintains records in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
9. Performs Other Related Duties
10. • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Three (3) years of related experience.

• Principles and techniques of managing a social services caseload.
• Principles and practices of providing social services.
• Program eligibility requirements within an assigned service area.
• Principles and practices of records retention.
• Principles and practices of report preparation.
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
