Maintenance Technician

School Maintenance TechnicianThe School Maintenance Technician is responsible for the general upkeep, repair, and safety of the school buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. This role ensures a clean, safe, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position requires you to perform routine maintenance and respond to repair needs across a variety of building's, grounds, and fleet/equipment systems.Key Responsibilities:Perform routine inspections, repairs and preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systemsComplete facilities repairs (drywall, painting, flooring, doors, locks, windows, furniture)Respond promptly to maintenance work orders and emergency repair requestsPerform basic plumbing repairs (leaky faucets, clogged drains, toilet repairs)Assist with seasonal building and equipment preparationsMaintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairsEnsure compliance with OSHA, fire code, and district safety regulationsSafely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light machineryRespond to after-hours emergencies as needed (alarms, weather events, facility failures, etc.)Support custodial staff as needed during peak periods or absencesGrounds Care Responsibilities:Mow, trim, and edge lawns; maintain athletic fields, playgrounds, and green spacesWater and maintain landscaping beds, trees, and shrubs; perform seasonal planting and pruningMaintain walkways, parking lots, and drives including sweeping, litter/debris removal, and pothole repair/reportingPerform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, and parking areas; apply salt/ice melt as neededMaintain outdoor drainage systems and irrigation systems; identify and repair leaks or clogsInspect and maintain fencing, gates, signage, and outdoor lightingMaintain playground equipment and surfacing; report safety hazards immediatelyKeep dumpster areas, outdoor storage, and grounds equipment sheds clean and organizedVehicle & Equipment Maintenance Responsibilities:Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on district vehicles (buses, trucks, vans, carts) per manufacturer and district schedulesPerform general vehicle maintenance, including fluid checks/changes, belts, hoses, battery checks, brake inspections, and tire pressure/tread checks (within scope of certification/training)Maintain, service, and repair grounds equipment (mowers, blowers, trimmers, snow plows/blowers, tractors)Maintain, service, and repair small engines and powered hand toolsMaintain and repair custodial equipment (floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, carpet extractors, pressure washers)Track and schedule vehicle inspections, and required servicing; maintain maintenance logsCoordinate with outside vendors/mechanics for repairs beyond in-house capability or certificationMaintain a clean, organized, and safe shop/garage area, including proper storage of fuels, oils, and chemicalsOrder and maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment as neededEnsure all vehicles and equipment meet safety and compliance standards prior to useQualifications:High school diploma or equivalent required2+ years of experience in building maintenance, facilities, or a related trade preferredWorking knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC systemsExperience with groundskeeping/landscaping equipment preferredBasic mechanical knowledge of small engines and vehicle maintenanceAbility to read and follow safety data sheets (SDS) and use chemicals/cleaning agents safelyA valid clean driver’s license required; CDL a plusAbility to pass a background check and physical, per school/district requirementsAbility to obtain fingerprints and keep active with The Department of Education (CHRC)Physical Requirements:Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularlyAbility to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders for extended periodsComfortable working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitationAbility to work at heights (ladders, lifts) as neededAbility to operate motorized grounds and vehicle-related equipment safelyPreferred Skills:Basic knowledge of building, grounds, and vehicle-related codes and safety regulationsExperience working in a school or institutional settingStrong problem-solving skills and ability to work independentlyGood communication skills for interacting with staff, students, and vendors
