JOB DESCRIPTION: LIFEGUARD

Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly Reports to: Aquatics Director Summary/Objective: A Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring pool activities, performing rescues as needed/warranted and for ensuring member/swimmer safety. A lifeguard must enforce all safety guidelines as outlined by the JCC and remain alert throughout an entire shift. Additional job duties a include leading swim lessons, preparing activity and incident reports and performing pool maintenance as needed. Essential Functions: 1. Ensure that all policies and safety protocols are being followed during assigned shifts. Enforce pool safety rules. 2. Maintain constant surveillance of individuals in the water and in the pool area. 3. Act immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of individuals in the event of an emergency. Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services. 4. Do stand rotation during regular shifts. 5. Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service 6. Perform chem checks according to scheduled rotations. Ensure that all chem checks are carried out correctly and as scheduled or needed during assigned shifts. 7. Perform daily and weekly cleaning duties and ensure that all cleaning duties are completed thoroughly and according to guidelines during each assigned shift. 8. Maintain a working knowledge of the pump room and normal equipment readings. Check all equipment and readings to ensure it is operating according to set standards and protocols. 9. Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility. Maintain and uphold all of the cleaning and maintenance procedures. 10. Respond to questions and concerns from members when the Aquatics Director or Head Guard is not available. 11. Be visible and available to members, doing all you can to make their experience at the JCC a positive one. Resolve member concerns in an exemplary manner. 12. Instruct quality swim lessons as assigned. Working Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of outside weather conditions including temperatures above 80◦ in the summer. The employee may be exposed to long hours directly working in the sun. Physical Demands: This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching for long periods. The employee must frequently lift or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must always be able to keep focused and alert while pool activities are in session. Required Education and Experience

1. Experience as a certified lifeguard preferred.
2. Independent, highly-organized self-starter.
3. Enthusiasm for the role of aquatics in support individual and community

development and growth. 4. Strong work ethic and commitment to organizational mission. 5. Lifeguard Certified and CPR certification. Preferred Experience 1. Additional Safety, knowledge and experience for working with youth and youth Aquatic camps. 2. OSHA 10 Certified. General Expectations The Role of the Lifeguard is a dynamic one. A member will look to you for guidance and safety standards. Some people have never been to an Aquatics facility and may feel intimidated. Please be patient and understanding; and remember that it is important to demonstrate kindness and consideration of all members. A good Lifeguard will learn the names of the members they routinely see. We cannot remember everyone’s name, but you should refer to as many members as possible by name. If our members are not our primary concern, then you are in the wrong field. Treat each member as an individual. Their ideas and concerns are important to us.
