Located in the vibrant South Florida area, ICHS is dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare professionals through innovative educational approaches.
Purpose
The Labor & Delivery/Maternal-Newborn Nursing Clinical Instructor provides direct supervision, instruction, and evaluation to nursing students during clinical rotations in obstetric and maternal-newborn patient-care environments. This role ensures students develop the practical skills, clinical judgment, communication abilities, and professional behaviors necessary to provide safe, compassionate, evidence-based care to birthing patients, postpartum patients, newborns, and families.
Location: Fort Pierce, Florida
Available Schedules: Clinical schedules may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or twelve-hour shifts based on clinical-site and academic needs.
Responsibilities
Clinical Instruction & Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing students in labor and delivery, antepartum, postpartum, mother-baby, newborn nursery, and other maternal-newborn clinical settings.
- Provide direct, on-site oversight of students while they perform patient assessments, provide maternal and newborn care, administer medications, complete documentation, and communicate with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary perinatal team.
- Demonstrate and teach best practices in obstetric and maternal-newborn nursing, including maternal assessment, fetal surveillance, labor support, postpartum recovery, newborn assessment, breastfeeding support, patient education, and family-centered care.
- Guide students in recognizing and appropriately escalating maternal, fetal, newborn, and postpartum clinical concerns.
- Teach and reinforce safe practices related to fetal monitoring, maternal vital-sign assessment, postpartum hemorrhage awareness, newborn safety, thermoregulation, safe sleep, infection prevention, medication administration, and patient identification.
- Ensure student compliance with clinical-site policies and procedures, including obstetric safety protocols, patient confidentiality, documentation requirements, infection-control practices, and newborn-security procedures.
- Monitor student performance and provide timely, constructive feedback that promotes clinical competence, sound judgment, professional behavior, and confidence.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and professional clinical learning environment for students caring for patients and families during pregnancy, labor, birth, recovery, and the newborn period.
Curriculum Implementation
- Collaborate with academic leadership and course faculty to implement maternal-newborn clinical objectives aligned with course outcomes and program requirements.
- Integrate evidence-based obstetric, perinatal, postpartum, and newborn-care practices into clinical instruction.
- Reinforce didactic and simulation content through bedside teaching, guided clinical reflection, pre-conference, and post-conference discussions.
- Participate in the development, delivery, and evaluation of clinical learning activities, simulations, skills validation, and student remediation as needed.
- Evaluate student achievement of clinical competencies and communicate student progress, concerns, and recommendations to the appropriate academic leadership.
Professional Communication & Collaboration
- Serve as a liaison among ICHS, clinical-site staff, students, faculty, and academic leadership.
- Maintain open, timely, and professional communication with unit leadership, hospital staff, faculty, and students.
- Collaborate with labor and delivery, postpartum, nursery, neonatal, and other clinical-site personnel to support a safe and productive student-learning environment.
- Attend faculty meetings, orientation sessions, clinical-site meetings, training programs, and professional-development activities as required.
Administrative Duties
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of student attendance, clinical hours, performance, competencies, progress, and evaluations.
- Promptly report student performance concerns, patient-safety issues, clinical-site concerns, and incidents to the appropriate academic leadership.
- Maintain required clinical-faculty credentials, compliance documentation, licensure, and certifications in accordance with institutional and clinical-site requirements.
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, accreditation, clinical-site, and regulatory standards governing nursing education and student clinical experiences.
