Workday Platform Developer (HR & Finance Technology)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Workday Developer to join our HR & Finance Technology engineering team. In this role, you will be the core technical owner responsible for designing, building, deploying, and supporting enterprise integrations and custom extensions across our Workday ecosystem (HCM, Payroll, and Financial Management).

Our platform architecture connects Workday with a diverse set of satellite enterprise systems, corporate data lakes, custom Java/.NET internal applications, third-party benefit vendors, and global banking endpoints. You will work closely with functional analysts, enterprise architects, and cross-functional QA teams in an agile delivery model spanning our US and India technology centers.

Key Responsibilities

1. Integration Architecture & Development

• Design, build, and support complex inbound and outbound integrations using Workday Studio, Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB), Core Connectors, and Document Transformation.

• Write robust data transformations using XSLT, XPath, and custom Java functions for structured XML, JSON, and flat-file payroll/banking feeds.

• Develop custom REST and SOAP web service calls (Workday Web Services / WWS) to power real-time data syncs with custom applications, middleware layers, and enterprise identity management systems.

• Build, schedule, and optimize Reports-as-a-Service (RaaS) extracts and custom calculated fields for data ingestion downstream.

2. Workday Extend & Custom Application Engineering

• Design and deploy custom apps using Workday Extend (or Orchestration framework) to solve bespoke business workflows not handled by out-of-the-box configurations.

• Collaborate with backend developers to integrate Workday with custom-built enterprise microservices (Java /.NET) and enterprise message brokers.

• Maintain strict security protocols for integration system users (ISU), security groups, and OAuth 2.0 / API authentication.

3. Platform Maintenance & Semi-Annual Release Governance

• Monitor scheduled production integrations, proactively troubleshooting integration failures, runtime bottlenecks, and data transformation errors.

• Own technical readiness and regression impact analysis during Workday bi-annual feature releases (R1/R2) across sandbox and production tenants.

• Maintain integration version control, environment promotion runbooks, and tenant migration packages using tools like Workday Solutions, Git, or Kainos Smart.

4. Data Validation & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with QA automation/functional testers to design technical test suites, validate integration payloads, and reconcile cross-system data discrepancies.

• Collaborate directly with HR and Finance functional leads to translate operational policies into scalable technical designs and data contracts.

• Write detailed technical design documents (TDD), data interface agreements, and error-handling runbooks in Jira and Confluence.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: 5+ years of dedicated technical integration development experience within the Workday platform.

• Integration Tooling: Advanced proficiency in Workday Studio, Core Connectors, Cloud Connect, and EIBs.

• Transformation & Languages: Deep expertise in XSLT, XML, XPath, and JSON, with hands-on scripting experience in Java or Python for custom integration routines.

• APIs & Web Services: Solid working knowledge of Workday Web Services (WWS), REST APIs, SOAP endpoints, and secure API authentication (OAuth, digital certificates).

• Advanced Reporting: Proven experience creating complex Advanced Reports, Matrix Reports, Custom Dashboards, and Reports-as-a-Service (RaaS) with complex Calculated Fields.

• Module Knowledge: Hands-on integration experience across at least two core areas: Workday HCM (Core HR, Benefits, Compensation), Payroll (PECI, external payroll extracts), or Workday Financials (Procurement, GL, Accounts Payable).

• Delivery & Collaboration: Strong communication skills with demonstrated success delivering in a globally distributed team (coordinating between US East Coast and India time zones).

Preferred Qualifications

• Workday Integration Certifications (Workday Certified Integration Pro, Workday Studio, or Workday Extend).

• Experience developing custom applications via Workday Extend.

• Familiarity with enterprise ETL/data warehouse architectures (e.g., streaming Workday data into Snowflake, BigQuery, or Azure Lakehouse).

• Experience with middleware platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, or Azure Logic Apps).

Immediate Evaluation Matrix for Sourcing

• Code Exercise / Review: Assess live XSLT writing ability, Studio assembly flow logic (loops, error handling, splitter/aggregator components), and calculated field construction.

• Architecture Drilldown: Probe experience with high-volume payroll/benefit file processing, bank payment formats (e.g., ISO 20022 / NACHA), and resolving Studio timeout issues.

• Location Fit: Verify on-site presence eligibility for the selected office location (Charlotte, NC).
