Tower Technician IV - Construction - Kansas City, Missouri

Overview Leads and assists in the construction, installation, and maintenance of communications towers and support structures and related telecommunications equipment. Leads by example to facilitate timely job completion. Tower Technicians work irregular hours, travel frequently, and work at great heights in extreme weather conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Climbs and works on communication towers for the purpose of installing, replacing, and repairing antenna system equipment. Uses and cares for hand tools and mechanical equipment. Manages safety: ensures crew members comply with company and customer safety requirements; verifies and ensures all tools and rigging gear are safe to use; completes required daily Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) and manages if required. Knows hazards associated with tower climbing, construction equipment, and working on or near energized lines and equipment. Is able to climb tall structures (100+ feet) with 50 lb load; full understanding of job or project scope of work (SOW). Develops and writes detailed Method of Procedure (MOP) for a job/project. Analyzes situations accurately and adopts appropriate course of action. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Follows instructions and completes assigned courses of action. Recognizes safety hazards and performs duties in a safe manner. Maintains a clean, orderly environment by adhering to company policies and industry regulations/standards (OSHA). Experiences with custom tower rigging techniques; performs stapedrops. Proficient with all test equipment (sweeps, PIM, fiber testing, etc.). Performs GPS antenna alignment (Sunsight AAT); proficient with installation of antennas, RRH’s, ground kits, RET systems. Troubleshoots RET systems, runs required lines to topo of the tower; grounds coax lines and builds connectors of various sizes and types. Stacks towers, installs sector mounts. Has basic knowledge of microwave dish and radio installations. Leads a 4-man tower crew safely and within established budgetary requirements. Ensures jobs are completed fully, meet company and customer quality standards, and comply with COP requirements. Runs winch/cathead safely. Troubleshoots GPS antennas and tower lighting systems. Uses TMA Gaint testing, RF noise floor testing experience. Acts as a team lead and mentor to less experienced Tower Technicians. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of basic hand tools, mechanical equipment, and electro‑mechanical equipment. Good computer skills. Self‑motivated and able to learn quickly. Ability to lift over 70 pounds. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; 3‑4 years of industry experience. Excellent communication skills, reading, and writing (English). Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Clean driving record, valid driver's license, reliable transportation for travel. Ability to accommodate out-of-town travel if required. First Aid/CPR trained; OSHA 10, RFA Awareness Training. Experience with Anritsu Site Master, Andrew, PPC; tower mapping and antenna equipment. Experience with stacking self-support towers, installing waveguide, antennas, and microwave dishes. Knowledge of RFA awareness, replacement, and maintenance (coax, jumpers, TMA’s, connectors, weatherproofing). Highly organized and able to report verbally and in writing to the Tower Foreman. Physical Demands The role requires standing, hand use, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking much of the time, and occasionally sitting. The job requires lifting over 70 pounds. Work Environment Work involves moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, exposure to wet or humid conditions, extreme heat, electrical shock, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, and extreme cold.
