The Bard NYC residence hosts students participating in the Bard NYC study away program, as well as students from other colleges and universities. The Student Life Coordinator plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the residence, supporting students while helping to maintain a safe, welcoming, and engaging residential environment. Responsibilities include working with residents on conflict mediation, leading social and community-building programming, engaging with students on issues of health and wellness, and helping students adapt to life in New York City.

The Student Life Coordinator serves as a primary point of contact for students’ non-academic concerns and works to foster a supportive educational environment that promotes students’ individual growth, community engagement, and academic achievement. In addition, this role assists with monitoring residential facilities, communicating maintenance needs, supporting purchasing card management and charge reconciliation processes, and helping ensure that cleanliness standards, and overall building operations support a positive student living experience. The Student Life Coordinator also develops and distributes a weekly student newsletter to share important updates, upcoming events, resources, and community information with residents, students, staff, faculty and Bard College community.

The position requires full-time residency in the Residence Hall. Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation, responding to student concerns, crises, and emergency situations is required.

About Bard NYC:

Bard NYC is semester-long experiential learning undergraduate study-away program in New York City, which pairs academic study with professional internships. A semester combines 12-16 credits in a wide array of courses, including a core-seminar, with an internship of up to 20 hours per week.

The experience is accompanied by co-curricular programming to help students explore career pathways and build professional networks, as well as cultural programming to introduce students to New York City. The program builds off of the success of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs program, which welcomed students from around the world for more than twenty years. Bard College’s newly opened dormitory and learning space in Brooklyn, and expanded academic and internship offerings allow a larger number of students from a wide array of majors and career interests the opportunity to participate.

Bard NYC is an enterprising intersection of academics and applied practices, engaging the interests of Bard’s students and their peers from other U.S. and global institutions. Study away participants spend a summer, semester or year at Bard NYC during their sophomore, junior, or senior years. Bard NYC’s residence also hosts students from Bard’s MA in Global Studies as well as students from other colleges and universities studying or interning in New York City.

Academic rigor, creative and critical thinking, and commitment to fostering a community that supports diversity and accessibility is at the heart of all programs associated with Bard College, and the Student Life Coordinator will excel at working with and advocating for the diverse student body enrolled in the program.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with a residential community of up to 194 students, serving as a primary resource and point of contact for residence life and student affairs-related concerns

  • Collaborate with the Student Life team on housing operations, including housing assignments, roommate mediation, room changes, facilities concerns, and other aspects of residential life

  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate social, educational, and community-building programs within the Residence Hall and throughout the local Williamsburg community, with support from Bard NYC team members

  • Hold regular office hours and maintain consistent engagement with student residents, providing guidance and support on a variety of non-academic concerns, including assisting students as they adjust to living in New York City and, when applicable, the United States

  • Support student health, safety, and wellness by responding to student concerns, providing case management support for students experiencing emotional, psychological, or medical distress, and connecting students with appropriate campus and community resource

  • Respond to student concerns, crises, and emergency situations as part of a 24/7 on-call rotation, including assisting with after-hours incidents and emergency response

  • Identify, promote, and share cultural, educational, and community events taking place throughout Williamsburg and New York City that enhance the student experience

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute student events, programs, and community initiatives from concept development through implementation

  • Assist with the training, support, and supervision of student staff, including Peer Coordinators and other student employees

  • Participate in all student arrival and departure processes, including move-in and move-out operations, student check-ins, room inspections, walkthroughs, damage assessments, and related documentation each term and during summer operations

  • Assist with Residence Hall orientation, tours, and community introductions for incoming students, prospective students, and visitors

  • Work closely with the Director of Student Affairs and other Bard NYC staff to support overall Residence Hall operations, including conducting facility rounds, identifying concerns, submitting maintenance requests, and helping ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming living environment

  • Support basic financial and administrative operations of the student life office, including purchasing card management, tracking expenses, reconciling charges, and assisting with student life office management processes

  • Create and distribute professional print and digital communications related to Residence Hall living, student resources, and the broader Williamsburg community, including producing a weekly student newsletter with important updates, upcoming events, resources, and community information for students, staff, faculty, and the broader Bard College community

  • Manage Residence Hall social media platforms and create engaging digital content that highlights student experiences, programs, and community life

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Bard NYC Residence Hall operations and student success

  • Prior experience participating in an on-call rotation, responding to student crises, managing emergency situations, and supporting crisis intervention efforts in a residential or higher education setting is strongly preferred

  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including domestic and international students, and an understanding of the unique needs and challenges students may experience while transitioning to a new academic, cultural, or urban environment

  • Familiarity with student conduct processes, residential policies, conflict resolution techniques, and community standards within a higher education environment

  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills, with excellent written and verbal communication abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, handle confidential student matters, and make appropriate decisions in situations requiring discretion and independence

  • Strong marketing, communication, and digital content creation skills, including experience developing newsletters, promotional materials, and social media content to engage and inform student communities

  • Experience using a variety of digital platforms, communication tools, and software applications for creating content, managing communications, and supporting student engagement initiatives

  • Proficiency with common office technology and digital platforms, including Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, communication platforms, social media tools, and systems used for administrative tracking, documentation, and student engagement

  • Experience planning, coordinating, and executing events and student engagement initiatives

  • Strong organizational, administrative, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while also collaborating effectively as part of a team and with student leaders

  • Ability to manage day-to-day operational details while maintaining a broader perspective on programs, initiatives, and student experience goals

  • Strong working knowledge of New York City and familiarity with the resources, opportunities, and challenges of living in an urban environment

  • Ability to contribute to a department culture that values initiative, accountability, professionalism, strong work ethic, collaboration, and teamwork
