Description: This unit has a total of 15 beds, including 7 Labor and Delivery and 8 Postpartum beds. There is one operating room suite for C-sections. The unit experiences approximately 58 births per month. The nurse-to-patient ratio follows AWHONN guidelines of 1:1 for Pitocin, magnesium, or insulin drips and 1:3 couplet care. Common diagnoses include obstetric issues and neonatal care, with a focus on hypertension and gestational diabetes. RNs are required to read their own strips and troubleshoot as needed with respiratory therapy equipment. There is a charge nurse on each shift who also takes an assignment. Nurse aides and surgical techs assist with tasks such as vital checks and patient transfers. Anesthesia and OB/neonatology services are not in-house 24/7. There are specific shift times of 0645-1915 and 1845-0715. The unit does not allow self-scheduling, but block scheduling is permitted. Weekend coverage includes every other weekend, and holiday coverage includes every other holiday. Floating to areas such as Med-Surg and ER may be required depending on staffing needs. Scrub color is maroon, and scrubs are provided for nurses to change into upon arrival. Attributes that contribute to a nurse's success on this unit include adaptability and strong communication skills. Candidates must stay within a specified distance and cannot have current employment with any associated facilities within the past year. All requests for time off must be made upfront, as additional time off will not be approved after submissions. The hospital reserves the right to cancel a limited number of shifts within the assignment duration. The charting system utilized is MEDITECH. A BSN is not required for this position. Trauma Level is considered CAH. The care setting is Acute. This is a nursing position.
