Veterinary Extern - General Practice

An externship experience at Midwest Animal Hospital will give veterinary students the opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians and will be involved in gathering patient histories, performing physical examinations, creating treatment plans, conducting diagnostics, providing dentistry services, observing, assisting or performing surgical procedures, and managing medical care of patients. Students will also develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Duration, Stipend and Eligibility Externship experiences at Midwest Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. For students in the clinical portion of their education, a travel/living expense stipend of $1,500 is available.
