Communications Department Supervisor

Supervise the Communications Department to ensure the continuous and reliable operation of electronic, communication, and life-safety systems and equipment throughout all district schools and facilities. Systems may include fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers, communication/PA systems, marquees, scoreboards, and other assigned electronic equipment and systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Certification:

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid Texas Driver's License
• Relevant fire alarm, life-safety, electronics, or communications certifications preferred or required as applicable to assigned duties.

Minimum Experience:

Four (4) years of related experience in electronic systems, fire alarm systems, communication systems, life-safety systems, or a related field. Supervisory or lead experience preferred.

Special Knowledge and Skills:

• Ability to manage, motivate, supervise, and mentor assigned employees.
• Knowledge of fire alarm, life-safety, communication/PA, marquee, scoreboard, and related electronic systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot electronic systems and equipment.
• Ability to oversee, prioritize, schedule, and complete assigned workloads and tasks across multiple district schools and facilities.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, electronic schematics, equipment manuals, and specifications.
• Ability to coordinate work with campus administrators, district staff, contractors, inspectors, and vendors.
• Basic computer skills with the ability to learn and operate district software, electronic work order systems, and equipment-specific software.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively respond to emergency situations.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Supervise, schedule, prioritize, and assign work to Communications Department employees based on urgency, safety, criticality, and district operational needs.
2. Monitor work orders and departmental assignments to ensure work is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
3. Communicate with campus administrators and district staff to determine the scope of reported issues and provide updates regarding repairs, service, and system operations.
4. Provide guidance and training to district staff regarding the proper operation of assigned electronic and communication systems when necessary.
5. Monitor and oversee life-safety and assigned electronic systems throughout all district schools and facilities and maintain an effective preventive maintenance program.
6. Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, test, and verify the proper operation of failed or malfunctioning equipment and systems.
7. Assist the Director of Maintenance & Operations with reports, assessments, cost estimates, quotes, recommendations, and planning related to department systems and equipment.
8. Read and interpret electronic schematics, construction drawings, specifications, technical manuals, and other equipment documentation.
9. Oversee and assist with the installation, programming, testing, maintenance, and repair of new and existing electronic equipment and systems.
10. Oversee the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of district fire alarm and other assigned life-safety systems in accordance with applicable requirements.
11. Oversee the maintenance and repair of fire extinguishers and coordinate required inspections and services.
12. Oversee and maintain district communication/PA systems, marquees, scoreboards, and other assigned electronic systems and equipment.
13. Coordinate with contractors, vendors, inspectors, and other district departments when specialized service, warranty work, inspections, repairs, or installations are required.
14. Maintain appropriate documentation and service records for inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, equipment, and completed work.
15. Ensure assigned employees follow district policies, departmental procedures, safety requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
16. Monitor equipment and material needs and assist with obtaining quotes and recommendations for repair, replacement, or upgrades.
17. Safely operate and ensure proper use of test equipment, ladders, lifts, district vehicles, trucks, and other equipment required to perform assigned duties.
18. Travel between district schools and facilities as necessary to inspect work, troubleshoot problems, coordinate projects, and respond to service needs.
19. Respond to after-hours emergency calls involving assigned systems and equipment as required.
20. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Maintenance & Facilities.

Equipment Used

Small hand tools, power tools, electronic test instruments, volt/amp meters, diagnostic equipment, computers, ladders, lifts, district vehicles, trucks, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, reaching, and lifting. Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing more than 45 pounds. Responsibilities of the position may require irregular work hours and response to after-hours emergencies.

Environment:

Work both indoors and outdoors; exposure to hot and cold temperatures and changing weather conditions; work in confined spaces; work around electrical equipment; work at elevated heights and on uneven surfaces; and occasionally work alone. Position requires frequent travel between district schools and facilities.

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: Auxiliary 8 Annualized
