PURPOSE OF POSITION

Responsible for the development and implementation of a Student Success/Life Skills Program to help students grow in knowledge to live a successful and independent life in this increasingly complex and information-rich society. Using the Dine' cultural values as the heart of the program, the Student Success Coordinator will oversee a balanced program that is focused on the intellectual, emotional, and personal development of the whole student where all students are equally encouraged and supported to fully participate and succeed.

The purpose of the Student Success/Life Skills Education component of Navajo Preparatory School is to provide experiences and exposures which will better empower youth to take charge of and accept responsibility for their personal and social growth. The Student Success/Life Skills program will help students achieve their personal best in life and maintain positive relationships and respect for others by establishing a strong foundation of Dine cultural values and teachings.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum a High School Diploma is required. A Bachelor's degree in Education is preferred. or related field, i.e, psychology, human relations, social work.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in Educational environment or recreational director.
  • Knowledge of Native American learning styles, teaching methodologies and strategies, and student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Creative, energetic, dynamic and good organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Demonstrate mastery of oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, teachers and community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging social issues facing teenagers.
  • Knowledge of available academic and psycho-social support programs and services.
  • Ability to speak Navajo preferred.
  • Evidence of a basic understanding of the Navajo Culture.
  • Able to work flexible hours primarily after school hours.
  • A valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Maintain certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen with appropriate trainings.

Navajo/Indian preference:

Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

The position is based on 220 contract days.

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

SUPERVISOR

Primary: Division Director of Student Life and Wellness

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

General Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Support and efficiently carry out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Policies and Procedures.
  • Represents NPS in a manner to reflect professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
  • Secures and protects the confidentiality of student information.
  • Accepts direction and feedback from supervisor and follows through appropriately.
  • Commits to a growth plan that relates to the scope of services provided to the School.
  • Relates and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, school staff, students, parents and community members in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Work with the Special Project Director to implement appropriate use and implementation of Title IV funds.
  • Performs other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the supervisor may delegate or assign.

Life Skills and Student Success:

  • Develop, maintain and oversee the after school program that teach practical meaningful life skills through activities, workshops and classes.
  • Promote and model understanding and applying Ke' kinship and respect for Navajo cultural values.
  • Organize and promote Navajo and other Native American cultural enrichment opportunities to promote positive self-identity and use of the Navajo language.
  • Organize programs and activities to promote values clarification, character development, principles and standards that guide our lives, such as writing a personal mission statement.
  • Organize programs and activities that encourage personal responsibility and people skills, i.e. problem solving skills, proper etiquette, speaking, etc.
  • Organize programs and activities to promote total wellness eating right, exercise, relaxation, nutrition.
  • Organize programs that promote leadership development in the dominant society and leadership in the Navajo/Native American society; Provide opportunities for students to develop as "Yideeskaagoo Nataani," Leaders now and into the Future.
  • Organize activities to help students gain knowledge on family and consumer sciences, home smarts, planning, purchasing and cooking meals, sewing, washing, etc.
  • Organize seminars, workshops and short classes to teach students the importance of Financial Literacy: Budgeting and Money management, Investment Decisions, Credit Cards, Taxes, Loans.
  • Responsible to maintain Hogan, Fitness Center and student accountability for sign in sheet for Title I funding documentation.

Recreational Programs:

  • Assist the Director of Student Life and Wellness in a leadership capacity to development the recreational management programs.
  • Oversee and maintain adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with ongoing school social functions and intramural programs; work with the Athletic Director for scheduling of activities to avoid conflicts with the interscholastic athletic program.
  • Establish and maintain a master calendar of extracurricular programs, activities and events for the NPS community. Monthly calendar will be sent and posted on school web site.
  • Develop student surveys to identify extracurricular interest and needs of students.

Weight Room Management & Supervision :

  • Supervise and maintain the weight room during non-school hours to maintain safety of students, equipment and overall security.
  • Develop a schedule of weight room use by others, including sports programs, staff and general use.
  • Routinely check the safety and inventory of weight room equipment.

Mentorship and Support

  • Help acquaint student residents with campus and community organizations.
  • Market services to students, i.e, tutoring, study hall, counseling, health services, etc.
  • Refer students to the mental health counselor when it becomes evident or to the Academic Counselor when academic support is needed by students.
  • Assist staff advisors in the execution of planned evening activities.
  • Plan activities to acquaint new and returning resident students with one another to create a family-like environment.
  • Plan activities and programs designed to promote the personal, social and academic development of students that are specific to the male student population.
  • Plan, support and promote activities to promote a spirit of volunteerism in the community.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of various health promotion activities or events, including but not limited to:
    • School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)
    • Natural Helpers training retreat
    • Natural Helpers meetings and activities
    • Native Hope training
    • Community Health Day / Health Fair
    • Health & Wellness Day
  • Maintain log of all events and activities for reporting purposes.

EVALUATION

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
