Job Opportunity

Position Overview

This position involves essential functions within the central sterile processing department, ensuring the smooth operation and proper sterilization of surgical instrumentation. The role requires effective collaboration with various departments, emphasis on safety and quality control, and a commitment to maintaining certification and continuing education.

Shift Details

• 32-hour day shifts
• Responsible for some weeknight and weekend call

Essential Functions

• Manage daily assignments and communicate operational needs with the OR charge nurse/practice leader.
• Ensure the efficient operation of surgical instrumentation in the perioperative services.
• Maintain CRCST certification and ensure engagement in continued education.
• Assist in organizing continued education and in-service programs for the central sterile department.
• Perform daily checks and verify proper operation of autoclave units prior to use.
• Manage daily supply inventory and order necessary supplies as needed.
• Perform biological and chemical tests at the beginning of shifts and accurately record results.
• Inspect gas and steam autoclaves for any signs of malfunction, reporting to the Central Sterile Supervisor.
• Apply knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap and package items for sterilization.
• Process items using either ethylene oxide or steam sterilization appropriately.
• Assist in processing department supply charges and perform clerical tasks as requested.
• Collaborate closely with the Central Service Supervisor and assist in orienting new personnel.
• Implement aseptic techniques in daily assignments.
• Conduct general cleaning of departmental areas, including surfaces, racks, shelves, and storage cabinets.
• Properly store and stock supplies and equipment in the Central Service department.
• Demonstrate knowledge regarding instrument handling, tray preparation, and special procedure items.
• Perform tray assemblage and preparation of supplies for sterilization.
• Monitor sterilization dates on supplies and restock patient care unit supply carts.
• Contribute to departmental performance improvement activities.
• Clean scopes manually and utilize the medivator process for high-level disinfection.
• Support the ordering of supplies to maintain appropriate levels and facilitate patient flow.
• Assist other departments as required and perform any other assigned duties.

Physical Requirements

The position may require exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Frequent activities include reaching, handling, and stooping.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

• High school graduate (or equivalent) required.
• Registered Central Service Technician certification required.

Minimum Work Experience

• Minimum of 6 months experience in central sterile processing.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong work ethic, possess knowledge of standards set by the IAHCSMM, and exhibit superb interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
