Day in the life
You start by reviewing product drawings and deciding how the part should be cut. From there, you program the Swiss-type CNC lathe to produce each feature, set up tools and bar stock through the guide bushing, and run a first article. You fine-tune wear and geometry offsets, verify dimensions with hand inspection tools, and document your results before moving to production. Throughout the run, you monitor the machine, check parts, and complete any required paperwork.
What you’ll work on- Program cuts directly from product drawings and determine the best process sequence.
- Set up and operate Citizen and Tsugami sliding-headstock (Swiss) lathes.
- Adjust offsets to hold specifications during production.
- Measure and inspect components; record results and close out documentation.
On a Swiss lathe, material feeds through a guide bushing so turning occurs right next to a point of support. The spindle advances the work past the tool, letting you machine long, slender parts efficiently and with stability along the entire length.
Skills that help you succeed- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Hands-on background working with machinery.
- Strong math and metalworking fundamentals.
- Comfort interpreting drawings and translating them into a machining program.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software is a plus.

- Basic inspection instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, gauges)
- CAD/CAM exposure welcomed
